Rating Valid for ?.................
Hello Learned Collegues!
I did my AFI in 1996, QFI in 1997 have 1500 hrs instructing under the old belt but haven't instructed since my rating lapsed in 1999.
The question is, how long is the ticket valid for before I have to do the whole thing again. Am I correct in believing that I have to do a seminar and a test?

737-NG First Officer - Hadn't used my QFI rating for over 6 years, last test was 7 years ago.
The CAA wrote back and said do at the descretion of an FI instructor, then a test.
Yes, you will have to do a seminar as well, these are about £500 with accomodation and only run every 2 months.
On the plus side, your QFI rating will be valid for 3 years. To renew you will have to do 2 of 3 things : Test, Seminar, or 100 hours instructing.
I am planning to renew mine later this month, seems plenty of part time QFI work around nowdays.

Remember that if you are paid for giving instruction, it is aerial work. If you fly for an airline, you must declare any external aerial work you do to your employer and it will count as flying hours under your airline's FTL scheme. Your employer probably reserves the right to prevent or restrict you from doing aerial work outside the company roster if it would compromise your rostered duties due to FTL limits. The AEF pilots ran foul of this regulation and tried to argue that flying Air Cadets was "recreational". I don't know the outcome but I think they lost the arguement.
Of course if you wish to offer your services as an instructor for free, then that is a diferent matter. But then how could you recover the cost of renewal and seminar? Perhaps if the flying club were simply to reimburse these costs, it would not count as "hire or reward". Does anybody know the answer to this?
£500 for the seminar seems steep. I think the AOPA seminar is £229 inc VAT without acccomodation.

Hey, sorry if I upset you. I assumed you were interested in instructing for a flying club part time whilst employed by an airline, and therefore thought my post relevant to the thread. I appologise if I assumed wrongly.
I got a similar letter to mfds from the CAA re renewing my FI rating and could have given you the same info , but mfds got there first.
