Woman executive of Air Asia dies in a freak accident

Publication Date : 06-09-2010

A woman executive of Air Asia airline died in a freak accident at Hyderabad airport Sunday (September 5) after her arm got caught in an aerobridge that was being retracted after the boarding of passengers on the airline's Hyderabad-Kuala Lumpur flight. Amrita Roy, 24, a resident of Kalighat in south Kolkata, had joined the airline in June this year, and was posted at Hyderabad as a guest services officer.

Officials said Amrita was on the aerobridge, writing something using one of the walls as a support around 9:30 am. As the aerobridge was being retracted after passengers had boarded, her arm got caught in the telescoping wall of the aerobridge. Roy immediately collapsed from shock and was rushed to Apollo Medical Centre at the airport for emergency medical attention where she succumbed at 10:40am, according to an airport spokesperson.

The airport police have registered a case of accidental death.

“A committee headed by the deputy CEO has been immediately formed comprising the chief operating officer of Delhi Airport and chief security officer at Hyderabad Airport to investigate the incident and ascertain complete facts of the case,” P Sripathy, CEO, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited, said in a statement. “The incident is most unexpected in nature and it is very unfortunate. We deeply condole her death and our prayers are with her family,” he said.

Amrita Roy’s body was flown to Kolkata late Sunday night
