Flight dispatching in Australia

Hi there,

I'm currently working as a dispatcher in Ireland but am thinking of accompanying some pals on a 6-12month working holiday to Oz. I'd like to work flight ops while I'm there but am having a hard time finding any info on jobs available, where to look etc.
Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you'll have no chance of getting a job in OZ for such a short time.

The working visa retricts you to a max 3 months with any 1 employer and the airlines won't touch you for such a short time as by the time they have trained you and sorted out security passes etc etc it's time to move on.

It's a bit ****ty considering when an Aussie comes to the UK they can not only stay for 2 years compared to our 1 over there but they also have no max restriction on how long they can work with an employer.

I went back in 1997/98 and all I'd ever done was work in aviation and could not get a job in the airports/airlines at all for reasons stated above. The only work I ended up getting was office work through temping agencies but because I'd never worked in an office before I wasn't familier with the differant pc packages used in office work so just got crappy jobs like stuffing envelopes and moving boxes and stuff.

I'd suggest brushing up on either bar work ,shop work or learning as much as you can about the differant pc packages if you want to get an office job. They are the easiest/ most widely available jobs to get.

It ain't as easy as you might think to get work over there especially now that every prince and his dog are going !!.

Good Luck.

Thanx for the reply,

I was only really interested in going there if it was possible to get flight ops work. I had no idea that there were so many restrictions. It makes sense if you can only work 3months at a stretch that they wont take you on. Well, thank you again for the info, at least I know now and on that I reckon a 4week holiday with my mates will be enough!!

Cheers matey!

p.s. in general what's the job scene in flight ops like in Oz...say if someone were to move there permanently?

There are currently no dispatchers jobs at skippyjet airlines but check out the website for the new LCC airline starting up soon, JETSTAR.

www.jetstar.com.au

They are asking for expressions of interest but don't give any details of job or pay.

Mind you, some people are already calling it PORNSTAR 'cos it's widely believed that everybody who works for them are going to get fd

Lotsa luck
