I do not know what version Norton you were using. Norton SystemWorks 2002 (Norton AntiVirus 2002) works well with XP. Norton AntiVirus is one of the top rated antivirus softwares out there. Consumer Reports here in the USA rated it the best and McAfee the worst.

For the last three years I've been using OnTracks Fix-It Utilities and am very happy with its virus scanner and tools.

Updates have been free for all three years. The virus program finds not only virus on my machine, but also on the lan at home.

But I especially like its tools for the registry. I take good care of my computer, but they have a program called "Registry Fixer" that straightens out your registry. First time I ran it it found 1600 errors on a computer that was less than six months old.

It also has a registry defrag that speeds up the computer. Not to be confused with the basic scandisk/defrag on the hard drive.

I have learned though, that when I use OnTracks defrag (Slightly better than MSN's" program, I have to control alt delete all open programs except systray and explorer; otherwise the defrag program will hang.

Completely happy with Norton System Works 2002, with continual live update. Stopped a couple of viruses and worms. (Win2000).

The reason why I’ve got shut of Norton’s is because many months back I upgraded to XP and due to Internet Security 2000 not being XP compliant I needed to buy Internet Security 2002, so I looked on the Symantec web site and decided to buy on line from Symantec and down load Internet Security 2002.
I down loaded to software, but couldn’t register it and could not update the virus software. So any virus that have come out since February then I couldn’t deal with, so I tried to get technical help from Symantec who just wouldn’t help me.
Early this week I got a worm and Norton’s couldn’t deal with it, so I contacted Symantec for help to get the software that didn’t work to work, I managed to get there number which was and Irish telephone number and they said that they wanted my credit card number because they wanted to charge me £59.00 to get the Internet Security 2002 software to work, this was more than the cost of the software which never worked in the first place, so I had to pay the £59.00, after 2 hours and 40 minutes on hold……………YES 2 hours 40 minutes on and international call I got to speak to technical, after only 10 minutes, the technician said that there was I fire alarm test in the building and would have to terminate the call……….I said could you contact me when you come back into the building, or could I have your direct number……….no he said you will have to come through the switch board, I said that it had taken me just short of 3 hours to get to speak to him, he said bye and the line went dead.

I am a bit upset to say the least, so I contacted Barclay Card to get the payment back for that call on the grounds of not getting the service I paid for, and the original cost of the software that didn’t work I will claim back through the County Court,

So this is why I’m never, never going to use a Symantec product again, so what’s the use in buying some thing that if on arrival doesn’t work they charge you more than the product cost to even talk to them.

A-V-8R - for those special moments when you want to shut down almost everything as you mentioned, use EndItAll, a very neat little piece of freeware by the great Neil Rubenking.

Cleanly closes everything unessential to Windows (customisable) so you don't have to give 'em the three-fingered-salute one by one. Get it at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,697,00.asp or just search for EndItAll with Google.

I'm using McAfee with no hassles meself.

Lightbulb

Yes I too got the hump with Norton's products.
No it is not free, but it works for me, this past week picking up on a worm that the family had downloaded

Just upgraded from McAfee VirusScan 5 to version 6
Something hosed my V5 DAT files & I couldn't stand the thought of reviving it all so went out and got V6. Tried "Repair" on V5 and to my surprise it worked and V5 was functional again.

Thought "Oh Hell, why not!" (foolish boy..) and installed V6 anyway. Not that impressed with installer - 2 big downloads required even tho' I had the disk. Several hiccoughs that made me sweat, finally sorted them out but I bet quite a few users would have given up. All seems OK now though.

Tip: You MUST completely uninstall V5 first, the V6 installer is lying when it says it can manage.

Worth it? Probably not - the scan-engine doesn't seem that different (it may be the same 4160 engine?) tho' the new HAWK e-mail-out checker will alarm if Outlook suddenly starts sending off a stack of viral e-mails.

Another alternative (for the cheap skates like me) is a free online virus scan from 'Trend'

There is a registration screen but it gives you the option to bypass it.

I have been using McAfee for some 2 years now and have been entirely satisfied. However, a problem about which I know nothing occured, and I had to uninstall VirusScan5.21 in favour of VirusScan6.0. It was a disaster trying to replace one with the other! McAfee sent me an 11 page doc on how to rid my pooter of every single file of 5.21 so that 6.0 would load. ALL my efforts were fruitless and, in the end, pointless.

I was advised to load AVG, which is free, and I have to say that I am delighted. It found 6 viruses and 'healed' them. It updates itself automatically and it doesn't slow down the pooter unlike a lot of other programmes.

Change to AVG is my advice. For what it is worth.
