Question Help req'd with image sizing

Can any internet experts in this forum help me with a problem which I get with pictures posted in our Rotorheads Around the World collection from time to time.

An example, posted today:

The picture, posted as an [IMG], is enormous - far too big for a web page.
However, if I post the URL for the picture, although it initially appears at the same size, it then reduces to a smaller size.
I'm puzzled because the URL for both sizes is the same.
Click on this link and you'll see what I mean.

How do I get the picture to appear in the smaller size when it's posted as an [IMG] in Rotorheads?

Heliport, I assume you are using Internet Explorer. If you click Tools -> Internet Options, click the Advanced tab and scroll down to Multimedia, the "enable automatic image resizing" option is checked - correct? IE is rescaling the image to fit in your window, and, for some reason, this doesn't trigger on PPRuNe (probably because of the way Tables are used to display individual posts).

You'll need to rescale the picture, or ask the owner to do it - 640x480 is usually a good size.

The newer IE versions indeed resize the photo automatically to fit your screen, but they only do this if the window ONLY holds an image. If you've got a page with an image on it then the HTML code in the page tells the browser how big the image should be. If nothing is specified it is shown at full size, this is the case when you insert an image in a posting on a forum.

So indeed the best thing is to resize the image first, and then insert the smaller image. It's also kinder on those souls out there still using older IE versions or different browsers, as these may not have the handy function described above.

Heliport,

You can easily resize the pictures before uploading them to the web with either MS Paint or MS Photo Editor.

Richard

I resize if necessary when I post images. Problems arise with some pics posted in our Photo Gallery.
Thanks for the tip about MS Paint and Photo Editor. I haven't tried them, but will.

Another query while I'm here with the experts, please.

Using the picture above as an example .....
The picture is a jpg.
However, if I 'Save Picture as ......' , it will only save as a bmp.
ie The Save as Type .......' dropdown menu doesn't offer any option other than bmp.

Any idea why?
Do I need to change any settings?

(I'm using Windows XP and IE6)

This issue may occur if your Temporary Internet pages cache is full and/or if you have "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" selected in Tools, Options, Advanced Tab and are loading the page over a secure connection (https).

I would first go Delete the temporary Internet files. To do so, click Tools, click Options, click the General tab, and then click the Delete Files button.

If that does not work, then click Tools, click Options, click the Advanced tab, clear the Do not save encrypted pages to disk check box, click View, and then click the Refresh button.

Take Care,

Richard

Temporary Internet pages cache not full, but emptied anyway.
"Do not save encrypted pages to disk" wasn't checked.

No change.

Heliport - can you try this suggestion from the Microsoft Knowledge base

Internet Explorer Saves Images As Bitmaps (.bmp Files)

It's similar to Richard's suggestion, but seems to have an extra step.

Evo

Thanks for the M$ link.

I had a similar problem with Paint/WinME (no save as JPEG), a bit of search got me the solution (had to use regedit)

Just in case : http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;230902
