What I'm suggesting is that a lot of these highly qualified individuals may not have considered becoming cabin crew with BA in the first place had the pay been £20k rather than £30k
I cannot disagree with you on the above - spot on. I think what I was really trying to say is that to reduce somebody's salary by ten grand is going to be pretty hard to swallow...kind of an opposite extreme to the investing in people strategy (which should be British Airway's biggest asset!) I watch and wait with great interest if this happens........

As an LHR ground staff trainer this is a very lively thread with many valid views. Indeed CC are primarily involved in the provision of safety throughout a flight and indeed for much of the unsocial hours get adequate renumeration. Broadly speaking all at BA get adequate renumeration, however, most staff are far to comfortable with custom and practice that has and does exist making our wage bill far to high. Once again I aim that remark at all BA staff irrespective of what they do. There are in addition far to many managers / supervisers et al. Eventually there has to be futher wage freezes, new work practice and staff reduction if these profits refered to are to amount to anything. In the long run BA can only keep cutting costs. I do not think the traveling public care who they fly with, its the lowest fare with the best service that counts. This is all to apparent with the LC's in Europe of which most of there staff with the exception of the Flight crews are payed rock bottom wages, yet they still do a reasonable job. This is clearly seen within BA at present on shorthaul with the calibre and efficlency of the the Titan 737 staff.

HZ...some good points...
The middle management tiers at BA still need working on. Far too many Chiefs governing the front line, and then as opposed to cutting off the fat and leaning down these areas, there seems to be a continual effort to re-invent positions (i.e. MCS@CCO) Add to that the obvious protectionism and lack of dissemination of real information down the ranks and you have a very expensive operation!
I agree with you re: SH operations and low cost service. Its pretty much been this type of service in the states for quite a while no? As for LH, perhaps there is some scope for this out of LGW WW, but premium routes ex LHR need to be maintained as such....
