littlemissmel,

And which cubicle at QCC do you sit?

QF announced today in the SMH that less that 100 existing crew have applied for the LHR base. They have extended the time frame, according to the black widow 'To give them a bit more time'.

We don't need more time Lisley. The crew have already decided the action we will take to stop this base going ahead.

You have to hand it to the dimwits running QFs industrial relations department.

When QF f@ck up they do it, BIG time.

I have always had a few concerns re the industrial action we plan come years end to put a stop the the London base.

You see, QF longhaul crew are a diverse bunch of people with different wants and needs from their conditions of employment.

Our [QF introduced] bid system allows flexibility and choice once a little seniority has been accrued and people have RIGHTLY built lives around it.

The London base stands to impact directly hundreds, if not thousands of us however a large number of our more senior collegues havent seen the place, or Europe for years. For some of them at least, it just, "wasnt their aisle".

They have been busy operating closer to home, raising families etc, etc.

QFs decision [supported by the shorthaul FAAA] to remove ALL non 747 flying from longhaul crew will make further employment for MANY of my collegues difficult, if not ultimately impossible.

"The mothers club" [both male and female] for instance are those amongst us who are raising the next generation of Australians, with their partners or often, alone.

Flying for them means "Tasman day trips" and short regional 767 flying.

They will I suspect, be forced from the job given that their ability to balance work and family commitments has been tragically removed.

The hundreds of "Asian language speakers". Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Indonesian speakers etc, etc. will also be severely affected with the loss of flying. These are by and large very hardworking people who have traditionally taken enormous pride in the skills they offer their passengers. Many I suspect face a major loss of contact with family and friends.
The move also demonstrates QF couldnt give a rats about language skills, given shorthaul by and large, dont have any.

So in a nutshell there you have it.
QF with plenty of help from the shorthaul FAAA have successfully "disengaged" every faction of the longhaul flight attendant group from the business.
ANY shred of flight attendant loyalty that may have remained towards our employer, it is safe to say, is history.
Junior, senior, gay, straight, male, female, language speakers and the mothers club- QF have covered it all.

RIGHT NOW, in every crew party, in every DVD party,in ever bar and hotel foyer, the implications for us are being discussed.
You see, for shorthaul, this attack represents nothing more for them than an opportunity to shop once and a while on Orchard rd.
For many of us at longhaul, it represents our lives.

Our people WILL NOT go down without a fight.
We are 3500 strong and as I have said before, united in our resolve as NEVER before.

If the d@ckheads at QF think we are going to fight under Marquis of Queensbury rules they are even dumber than they appear.

The 747 fleet [thanks shorthaul] will be grounded come years end.

L2P "lets screw the roo".

BTW- Todays SMH had comment from the shorthaul FAAA in defence of it taking ALL of our "family friendly flying" - "Longhaul already do some of our domestic flying."

G H you are a
ledge i lov your imput. Leemo I agree with you but,,,,,MAM were starved of
work when in FEB last you guys had a stop work.So we worked cause QF asked
us to/frightened not to/and to survive with dole and or a fill in job not
enough money period. MAM it seems was ok with this and the FAAA hated
it.BUT,have you seen respected addresses?, FAAA and MAM share the same
office in Vic. My concern is now contractors will get a F/T job over devoted
MAM employees who have tried to please all and at times been placed in the
most horrible position. Leemo you need to understand its unlikley
contractors will go out when they have just started and have a termination
date.I think G H is correct. Chinup,good luck its a fantastic job but,this
aint a school yard debate babe its real life/careers mortgage familys etc.

L1A,

If the fixed term crew decide to work they are only doing themselves out of the possibilty of a permanent job in the future.

And even if they do all work they haven't got 4000 to replace existing crew.

I don't work for QF and I don't want the London base to go ahead either.....I just thought it might be of interest of some people that there was actually a website now for the recruitment......

littlemissmel,

My apologies.

The website you listed is only for existing crew and believe me we are all aware of it.

The company has been force feeding us how fabulous the London base will be through the Cabin Crew News, which nowadays is nothing but lies, speculation and propaganda.

They forget to mention lower pay, more hours, back to back 15hr duties, minimum time off etc...etc....

The company has even sent out postcards to every crew member with a picture of London on it and 'wish you were here'... another disgraceful waste of money at the hands of incompetent managers.

On Tuesday QF were saying they had received 72 applications all up and would extend the application period.

Another example of the managers not knowing their arse from their elbow.

AND if Hassell can assure us that no crew will be made redundant due to a LHR base why won't he agree to this in EBA 7?

Also heard today that the BNE base will be crewed by all new people and NOT existing crew wanting to transfer up there.

This is going to get very nasty and the crew have their guns blazing already. Bring on the strikes.

Interesting article on crikey.com.au - this is just a small part of the clip :

The ongoing myth of Qantas staff being expensive. Compared to ALL major competitors (Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, United) Qantas staff are inexpensive. Pilots, cabin crew and ground staff are cheaper then any of the above airlines. If you look at the annual report the flying rat Qantas, not its other subsidiaries, have increased management by 20%.Cabin crew had a redundancy where 10% left and had until now not been replaced. Funny the airline has not really expended since 9/11. If anything they have pulled out from Rome and soon Paris. As Geoff and his mates put all there eggs in two major baskets London and Los Angeles one can only hope nothing goes wrong there.

Long Haulers Settle down!!

Why are you longhaulers carrying on about shorthaul and how terrible we all are. Some of you on here are really bitter, nasty, aggresive people...i'd be scared to be served by you!!
As far as the London base goes, S/Haul didnt come up with the idea and the presentation i went to was attended by about 60 people, less than 10 were s/haul.
From what i hear, a chunk of the 200 odd people that applied for London could be L/Haul. And besides, with the aggressiveness that some of you L/Haulers have towards us dont expect anyone from over our side to support you in Dec when you start to cause industrial disputes!
The word i hear from our side is that no one will be going off in support...in fact, we might make some extra cash at Christmas time doing some more work covering you guys! And besides, i bet half of L/Haul wont go out when it comes to the crunch. Too many mortages to pay, kids to feed etc..
Its not like we haven't been thrown some hardships...Jetstar, Perth base opening took alot of our Perth overnights etc.
Our juniors earn just $50,000 per year and they work more hours than you guys so on the financial front there's no tears either!
Just be grateful you have a job that thousands would give their left leg for...if you dont like whats happening then you know what to do!

I've been reading these and many other threads in this forum for some time now - without responding until now, due to workload commitments at my end.

Sima...

"The word i hear from our side is that no one will be going off in support...in fact, we might make some extra cash at Christmas time doing some more work covering you guys!
It wouldn't matter if you wanted to anyway. When the Liberal Govt won the election back in 1996, the Workplace Relations Act was overhauled REMOVING the ability for one area of a company (ie. Short Haul) striking in sympathy for another (in this case, Long Haul).

It's against the law now...so you can't even if you wanted to.

As for making cash from this - be careful. As has been said time and time again on this forum, QF is seeking to - and SUCCEEDING by all accounts on here - to divide and conquer it's staff. Seems like they're winning - sadly.

"Its not like we haven't been thrown some hardships...Jetstar, Perth base opening took alot of our Perth overnights etc.
Jetstar has not given Short Haul ANYTHING in the way of hardship!

Oh please...

In ONE FELL SWOOP, when Impulse/QantasLink converted to Jetstar, Short Haul INSTANTLY GAINED OVERNIGHTS to Hobart, Launceston, Rockhampton, Mackay and additional Coolangatta overnights. AND Jetstar crew were the ones to lose their overnights, as part of the Low Cost model. AND we were the ones getting paid LESS to perform those overnights!

And what HARDSHIPS have Short Haul endured from Jetstar? What? Jetstar were ALREADY operating as QantasLink, operating to the same destinations they CURRENTLY served then as they do now...in fact, Short Haul picked up great deal of flying resulting in it's crews spending more time away from home then previously available.

Furthermore, NO AIRLINE in the WORLD is required to provide it's crew with overnights purely for their earning potential - in fact, arguing about loss of overnights is a dangerous course to take, especially when the allowances provided are meant to be FULLY EXPENDED during the course of the stay (according to the Tax Office at least...care to declare any income that REALLY wasn't used for it's intended purpose??)

Jetstar is a Low Cost airline designed to operate independently of the parent carrier - it is NOT designed to COMPETE with the parent carrier, therefore any threat posed by Jetstar is done with PROTECTING the parent carrier from any unwanted dilution of yield.

Yes, Jetstar does operate flights on the same runs as QF (SYD-OOL, etc), but not at the same times, and in most cases these particular services are to meet the demands of the business community who WANT the frills of a full service carrier.

"Our juniors earn just $50,000 per year and they work more hours than you guys so on the financial front there's no tears either!
And graduate psychologists earn $30,000 p.a. entry salary. For an unqualified position that only requires an RSA and First Aid cert, $50K isn't too bad, and that's what Jetstar senior FA's can expect to earn at the moment. Tops.

Oh - and we work more hours than Short Haul FA's, because our EBA permits it, as well as longer duty days in some cases. But that's for another thread.

Rather than shout at the top of our lungs "we've been done over by some other division, Short Haul FAAA has done this, etc etc etc"...consider this:

Life is too short for this kind of crap. As important as issues such as these are, life goes on. Work through them, but don't get carried away - because someone in QF will be getting paid lots if you do.

Sima,

interesting and rather disingenuous first post .

I dont think that there are too many longhaulers upset at shorthaul taking up the "proposed" LHR base.

Natual justice will prevail once they realise that poverty in Northern Europe isnt much fun.

What of course longhaul are VERY upset about is shorthaul moving to take ALL of our non 747 flying.
This move has the potential to force out MANY of us from the jobs we love.

L2P,

with your sign-off tag "lets screw the roo" you must be one of those bitter people i was talking about.

The roo has probably paid you good money over the years to buy a house, car, given you the opportunity to travel the world on your staff travel and generally given you a good quality of life through a decent pay packet each week.
Where else who you get paid the sort of money you are on to hand out tea/coffee or the chicken/beef and put the occasion person on oxygen.
Dont complain that you are always jetlagged, you are always away from home etc etc etc. If you only want to be a flight attendant then go join Jetstar and you'll be home every night. But you dont...you want the whole "travel the world thing" and its a bonus you get paid loads to do it.
I know you do long flights....so do we. Perth returns are a 11hr duty on the Airbus. In that time you will be lucky to get 25mins in our "crew rest" - an economy chair with the curtain hanging in your meal.
Now...isn't a SYD-LAX duty not alot more that? And how long do you get in the bunks on that duty?
You guys chose to do longhaul. The "good old days" are over and you are seriously kidding yourself if you think that the LHR base is "proposed".

Hassell did a presentation and told us the Borrgetti was quoted saying "as sure as the sun will come up tomorrow morning, QF is having a LHR base".
You got a better idea on how to save $18million? Lets hear it.

of course Hassell, Borregeti and the rest of the lying management mob are saying LHR is a sure thing. Its there job to do that.

But long haul crew have to agree on the lifting of the overseas crew cap first. If we don't say yes then the LHR is NOT opening. SEE UPDATED POSTS BELOW.

You need to take a bit of time out from your pro-company ramblings and check out industrial laws.

Basically when our EBA expires on Dec 17 2004 if the long haul crew have not voted yes to a new EBA then current one continues.

Meaning that the cap of 370 will continue until we agree to a new EBA. Of course none of us would ever agree to a new EBA which contained an increase in overseas based crew.

So this could go on for a long, long time.....we will win...prize being saving our flying...keeping our hard earned conditions...and allowing thousands of Australians to live their dream of becoming long haul crew.

And by the way sima, do you really believe the company have a reason to so desparately save $18m when they are awarding themselves 66% pay rises...disgraceful

Screw the roo...

sima,

goodness me we are a pro company/anti [longhaul???] CC little one aren't we????

Which floor do you work on, QCC4 or QCC5 ?

Im a little confused about your angle.
Is it that you support "The spirit of Australia's" move to employ 100's of UK nationals as flight attendants, and if so why?

Does it also please you that hundreds of longhaul flight attendants face being forced from their jobs if their ability to do regional flying is removed, and if so why?

All of these moves of course being made at the same time as QF reports its largest profit ever and the "pigs at the trough" are voting themselves a 66% pay rise.

Answers to above questions please.

just 4 the record

to our collegues from shorthaul let me just put the following to paper. its us this year and you guys next year. they take away a300-300 from us this year and if they need too next year from you guys. i am amazed by the shortsightness of many f/a's. the mugs in the office have been successfully splitting us where we ALL loose. !!!! instead shorthaul guys should ask their union why they play the companies lines in close association with mam. only combined we will ever go forward.

bunkmaster: your comments (presumably from the inside) match my opinion as I discussed on the "Qantas Interviews - Anyone herd back yet?" Thread.

Im glad there is someone else who appears to have a much greater insight then myself who also added 2 and 2 together, and appears to have got 4.

United we much stand; divided we will ALL fall.

Has the FAAA checked into how well the EBA cap will hold up? Qantas are not opening the base in their own name, so it occurs to me that this is the type of despicable acts managers get up to in order to breach an agreement.
ie. Qantas will claim "it hasn't hired any more overseas staff" (different company). This is the sort of thing they sit around thinking about. Otherwise (as pointed out), simply not reaching agreement on the new EBA will thwart their plans. They would have to offer some very big incentive to get you to agree, yes? Presumably something that you will have no control over them later removing?

Hi Ferris,

The FAAA have a legal team working on these matters, as of course do Qantas. The FAAA advises crew in recent meetings of the info I posted above so I think they would have confirmed this before informing the thousands of crew at the meetings.

I doubt the AIRC would be in favour of Qantas if they claimed they hadn't hired any overseas staff due to QF UK, due to it being a separate company.

Time will tell!

ALSO -

In the next couple of days Qantas staff who are shareholders will receive a notice from the company indicating that the Annual General Meeting will be held in Brisbane on 21 October 2004.

Attached to the notice will be a proxy and voting form for the various resolutions that the Qantas Board wants shareholders to vote on. There will also be a copy of the Qantas Annual Report included with the notice.

The ASU will shortly be issuing our recommendations to members and other shareholders on how to vote on the resolutions that shareholders must consider.

Of particular interest to ASU members are the resolutions dealing with:

The increase in directors fees by 66%
The election of directors
The share allocations to senior executives

What should you do?

Make sure you keep your proxy and voting form so that you can vote on the key issues. DO NOT THROW THE MATERIALS OUT. You can have an influence over these issues and as a shareholder you have every right to. Watch out for the ASU recommendations in the near future on how to vote on these crucial issues effecting Qantas.
