A question for the Aussies

More of a question for the Aussies (especially for you actually Biscuit Chucker)...

Given you work for an airline, were / are you able to claim your flying lessons as self-education expenses for the taxation year (ie, offset expenses against income)?

I've read the taxation rules, but not being a taxation lawyer (I get to interpret other boring legislation, luckily not tax though!) it would seem its possible as a continuation of your career....

Anyone pulled this off? (ie had the claim approved?)

Unfortunately no - that is not allowed by the ATO. This topic has been discussed at length on the D&G forums.

The ATO website has a lot of information available regarding rulings on this topic as well.

The rulings are quite clear on this - there is a number of accountants in all Oz major capitals that specialise in processing tax returns for people in aviation and they would also be happy to provide specific details of what is allowable.

Bu@@er....

I don't mind paying 47c for the $1 earned on tax, then another 10% GST (which makes 57% of my salary going on tax).... <insert sarcasm here>

Its just that they don't let me claim ANYTHING!

Angel

Well after 11 years in aviation, I've been very fortunate to have the opportunity to 'hold' a 767 (after it was taken out of Autopilot) over the Atlantic

That certainly got my interest

I've had a few (sadly due purely to financial reason) flying lessons, had friends and colleagues (qualified instructors) help out by taking me up in their a/c and giving me the chance to take the controls

I even worked in the local flying school in my spare time to get a better insight

I would be flying now if my finances allowed

I recently flew with a colleague in the cabin who had been a FO but sadly lost his medical
You never know who you've got behind you guys (just for qfmike)

What sort can I fly ones?

I can fly big ones - especially when playing on the PC, talking it up over a beer and of course during the obligatory flirting!

In reality I fly mostly 4 - 8 seaters and occasionally an Aerostar which is a twin.

Skippers....

slightly O/T but hey....

I'm flying with Skippers tomorrow to the airshow here in WA... never flown with them before but they seem like a good lot. We were supposed to be going with Skywest in an F50 but that got dotched because of numbers... so I'm told..... So now it's a Dash - again, something new. Anyone here that's going say hi - I'm following advice and making a Proon tag which leads into -

bring on the pins!!!

PS - if we do get pins, make sure the "pin" bit is good -Im so scatterbrained sometimes I'm sure it'll fall off somewhere...speaking of which, if any of you DJ mob finds a 747 Wallabies pin in one of your planes..... it's mine!!!!
