Redsnail,

that's an interesting experience you have there. Did you ever get any funny reactions from passengers when you gave them their meal? I mean, if I were sitting there and the pilot came to give me lunch, I'd be a bit surprised too

I can just see it happening

Pax: Are you going to fly the plane as well?

Pilot: No, we're all going to flap our arms and say "I do believe in flying"

Sorry. Work-induced boredom.

qfmike737, lol @ GUYS..... again!

I was working for an airline in Cairns called Tran-state. I was the FO on Bandeirantes and Twin Otters. Since they have less than 20 seats then a FA is not required. We'd get an esky with the cold packs of sandwiches etc at Cairns (or Mt Isa). I would put one on each seat and then get the esky back to catering. (or if there was food to spare, I'd put it back in the esky and put it in the cargo compartment) I'd greet the pax while they were walking to the aircraft. (Had to herd them because some wanted to get on the Ansett 146's...). I'd leave the main door open as we had no aircon on the ground. I would give them a briefing, you know the sort although depending on my mood and the pax onboard I would inject a bit of humour into it. (eg, listen up because I ask questions, that sort of thing). Check their seatbelts, shut the door and hop in the seat and then do pilot stuff. (Only a few times did I leave the seat inflight, usually when the captain changed his mind and wanted his food on that sector... does that sound familiar?)
At our outports, I didn't have to hand out the food (none left usually) but I would supervise the fueling and load/unload the freight and luggage. Very hard to look neat and tidy when it's +35 Deg 80% humidity and you've just shifted 600kg.

I've rarely encountered sexist atitudes from our colleagues. The pax however, weren't always as "up to date" with their thinking.
When I was flying Dash 8's the FA's would occassionally pop into the flight deck giggling because the passengers would look a tad confused seeing the FA doing her duties and a female voice on the PA. They used to say that their expression would change when they realised there was a female pilot on board. (Some changed to delight, others apprehension)
Can't win them all.

Ta Gallie girl, I reckon it's the FA's who are champions. I've just landed back in Sydney for a quick visit home.
There is no way in the world I could be cheerful and pleasant after a 8 or even 12 hour flight. I just have to keep the person sitting next to me vaguely amused.

Thank you to the guys and gals who looked after me (and all the other pax too) on the BA 15 LHR-SIN-SYD.

Welcome back to our fair shores Redsnail!

Shame you've landed in the second best city in Australia - Melbourne of course, being the best city!

(That should get me a decent flaming!)

Talking

Yeah, welcome back Redsnail....

had been wondering if you were Aussie, seeing as you had UK on the "where from" section.... puzzled me for a bit because I was sure you were.... now that explains it all.... working overseas...

You're right, I admire FAs for being able to keep (in most cases, anyway ) so cheerful at all hours and with some truly annoying people to contend with... same goes for check in!!!

Hmmm. Don't think I'm FA material then.....

And he's easy to spot - he's usually stalking some lonely unattached 747-400 promising that he'll call the next morning.....

But alas, Mikey is fickle and ends up with another aircraft the next morning....

He gets around - bit of a aircraft tart ain't ya Mikey!

Heh

Lol ozskipper, that's funny....

You really have Proon on your vest Mikey? That's neat - I think all of the airline people who Prrune need a way to identify each other - I always wonder if any CC on my flight are Prooners - but not game enough to ask! I think someone once mentioned bag tags but that may just be in my somewhat blurred memory today...

You guys'd recognise me as the pax on the redeye from Perth to anywhere, who doesn't sleep the whole flight and pays attention to the safety *every* time.... hmmm doesn't leave too many then, does it?

ppruneys!

Skysista I have in fact seen some crew with "PPRUNE" on a bag tag. Usually it's just a computer printout that is laminated.

Alot of pilots are familiar with the name pprune...many heard of it but may not have used it.

I simply have pprune written in marker pen.

Ditzy do you remember the day when you spotted me??? LOL it was my very first day being the level 5 leading hand LOL... I was so nervous I thought that I was in trouble for something when you were yelling out LOL

Ditzy...have you ever tried flying a plane?

It's Prune Pop who's in charge of the gadgets (it was t-shirts and sweaters at the Gatbash ). I'll ask him and let you know!

Pins...

Pins are a great idea - easy to wear, small but if done right, identifiable!

Could even do a comp to come up with some smart-alecky slogan for it...

Plus a proper bag tag would be cool - though I'm not sure it'd get the right kind of attention....

Bring on the PPRuNe Pin!

Hi folks

am an F/A in the sand pit at the mo and plan to do the PPL some time next year. No particular reason - just want to learn, especially after working on the CL560.

Reckon I will do the ground exams via distance learning over the next year.

Anybody got advice over the best place do to the PPL? Am trying to decide between the states and eu (obviously) but heard that can do the FAA stuff in states (cheaper and better weather) and then transfer it?

Also, heard oxbridge aviation best place for exams

any ideas?
