Yes, Mari, I didn't make it through to the AD and I am so trying again now Mari, do you know if having really short hair is okay (as a guy)? And how important is it to wearing and expensive attire as compared to not-so-expensive?

Thanks loads.

gj_1983

Thanks for such informative news article -- it's very uplifting for esp folks who are re-applying

@Pratu

There has been a lot written on the subject you are asking, especially Mari who has posted very valuable information about Open Days and what to expect, how to dress etc. Other PPRuNers have also contributed a lot. Read back on the posts and you will find invaluable tips. As this is the VIIth thread on the same topic, there has been a lot of attention devoted to the SAME questions you have just asked.

You may glean some tips on how to dress and what to wear, but it is hard, in my opinion, to put on a personality or an attitude. The recruiters have been at it for a long time, during my Open Day I remember the recruiter saying that she has been doing the same job for 7 years out of the 12 that she's been with Emirates, so if you put on a personality or pretend to be someone you're not, they will be able to look through you in a second. Having said that, there are unfortunately many who put on such a flawless performance that they have been able to get through the net, so to speak.

You already have the correct background (if there is such a thing! - who's to say that someone with a background in engineering but has fantastic people skills does not have the 'right' background) so just think ahead and anticipate how you'd like a premium customer to perceive you, and do what you can to project that image. I think one is able to polish up one's presentation, however, your core values must fit with those of Emirates'. As you are already in Dubai, you'd be able to understand what it is that they look for in their staff, for example, respect for our host country's laws and customs, working in a multinational and multicultural environment etc.

It pays to read back what other people have posted, sometimes it stumps me that people just don't seem to want to read back and just expect instant gratification. Is that a generational thing? Oh no.. you and I belong to the same generation! So it must be something else..

hey

I've just been reading through the forums and is it true you have to send them a resignation letter from your current job?? Also by the time the week starts in Dubai it will be a week and a bit since my status changed to 'you will be contacted' im just wondering if other people have had a similar experience? I know they are so busy and definitely don't want to call them...
and is it true they call in order of DOJ??
Thanks for any assistance - this has been such an emotionally draining experience but its worth it :-)

@tfran

Yes, you will have to submit a resignation letter from your employer to confirm that you have been 'released' from your previous job. I believe this is necessary to secure a UAE employment visa as Emirates will become your 'sponsor' under the "kafala" system. Should you progress to that stage, they will tell you to submit the resignation letter once you have passed all your medicals.

During my time, once my status changed to 'you will be contacted..' I was called within 24 hours, but it seems that people have been given DoJs until the end of September, so they have definitely stepped up recruitment. I agree that it's emotionally draining, however there is really nothing you can do to speed up the process, believe me, I tried! So I can totally empathise with what you're going through. It will come when it comes, you'll be right!

Essay

The topic can be anything, my French friend told me that hers was 'What would you change if you were the President/Prime Minister of your country?', and the topic wasn't even the one on the exam sheet, the recruiter just made the topic up! So yea.. it can be anything..

little complaining...

Oh, I really need to complain a bit. I didn't mean to but there are times... It's actually sucks that I cannot talk about my job with my friends and sister at home - they are not interested, they don't understand. And I don't want to complain to my colleagues here. (Anyways, you never really know what goes back to management. Seriously.)

I was gonna ask fingerscrossed about his rosters but I see you are not in Dubai yet, right?

I'm so tired, so exhausted... I had 72 hours in June plus 7 days of ground training. I fly around 116 hours in July and I just had SEP. I fly 115 hours in August. Beside that I need to do lots of paperwork as I'm a senior. Instead of doing my paperwork and other EK related studies, I'm on pprune... I just don't feel the urge to open the Portal and do the appraisals and finish some online courses on my 1 or 2 days off. I should be sleeping but I woke up because I know how much stuff I have to do...

Now, I know that the limit is 900 hours a year. I will have 700 by the end of August. So, I'm wondering how my rosters will look like afterwards. It would be nice to have 6 days off in a row or 3-4 extra days off before my vacation... But no: I'm afraid I will have Jeddahs (or other turnarounds if we start Delhi or Bombai on the A380 - maybe?) following an off, another Jeddah, off, another Jeddah, off... I'm sure Scheduling hates us...

So, back to the topic which might interests you: having a late date of joining might have a good reason. We might be short of trainers for example. I know many of my colleagues who just were selected for Part Time Instructors. They all go under trainig during July and August and start as Instructors later this year. Some of you have seen the vacant positions for Recruiters like 2 months ago. I know from my friends who applied that the selection process finished around 2 weeks ago. The new Recruiters need to be trained as well. Lots of people from the Main Fleet do the conversion courses right now and countinously. The trainings for SFS (onboard leaders) started in June after quite a long time. Both Main Fleet and A380 fleet. The people who moved up from Business or First Class needs to be replaced: there are upgrade courses (Economy crew moves up to Business, Business class crew moves up to First) going on for all grades.

As you can see the college is not only filled up with ab-initio groups but there are current crew getting training for Instructor, doing recurrent SEP training, getting trained for the A380 and crew who get trained in premium cabins or becoming a leader. Obviously we have a limited number of trainers, classrooms and simulators.

All the crew who are in the training college don't fly. They are removed from the roster for 1-2 weeks to get their new qualification. That's the explanation for my flying hours...

Someone before asked if the recruitment goes on like this: I think so. There are many aircrafts on the way and people resign, as well. We receive one A380 each month until December. (As far as I know...) I heard (I haven't seen the Airbus contract, though) that there should be 12 month "pause" after the 15th A380 aircraft. (I also heard that there will be some changes: no idea what.) However, Emirates wants to get the new planes as soon as possible so they will push the production as much as they can.

About the flying hours: G2s (economy crew) have nicer rosters, though. The new ones - A380 - has 75-95 hours usually, I think. You always get 4 days off in a row at least once a month and also 2-3 days off in a row beside that. They should fly instead of me: young, motivated, new so they need money and they are bored on their off days. Right now I just feel old and exhausted and I really don't have time to spend the money. Although, it's not bad: if I don't die and finish July, I can tell that I achieved my record income with 3900 euros including the Meal Allowances given in the hotels. And the exchange rate is not even that great right now: 1 euro is 4,7 dirham.

I know that some of you might be interested. So, my original roster has changed like this:

How does the A380 rosters look like?

July Roster

1-6 SYD-AKL (34 flying hours)
7-8 OFF (2)
9-10 SEP recurrent (7 flying hours paid)
11-13 LHR (14+3 flying hours - technical problem)
14-16 OFF (3)
17-22 SYD-AKL (34 flying hours)
23 off (1)
24-26 CDG (14 flying hours)
27 OFF (1)
28-31 ICN (17 flying hours)

What is a flying hour?
From chock-off until chock-on. You are paid for the actual time when the aircraft is moving.

August roster:
1 Toronto, 2 Londons, 2 Bangkoks, 1 Sydney-Aucland

How long are the layovers?

Layover in Toronto: 54 hours or 76 hours.
Layover in London, Bangkok, Paris: 24 hours.
Layover in Sydney:24, Auckland: 30, Sydney: 24 hours again.
Layover in Soul: 30 hours.

Good luck and happy flying!

Hopefulke

To hopefulke:
I had my OD and AD last weekend, and my topic in decussion was,: We are all in a commitee from the IOC. International Olympic Commitee and we had to discuss the next 2 up comming olympics, the london and the Brazil....

From these to games we had to take out 5sports from each, all 10 being different ones, due to the Golbal Financial Crises, we had to discuss which sports and why they were needed to be taken out depending on the countries needs for money??? throughout the whole discusions the ladies were watching all of us like hawlks.
They just mostly watch your body language and your listening skills, just dont ever talk over anyone, and dont be a leader .. Hope this helps...
