Salary level for a 727 VIP plane...?
My turn to ask a question...
xxx
I am a 747 "old fart" retiring in NOV...
Someone in Europe contacted me to fly a 727-100 with VIP interior.
Permanent position, part-time flying, maybe a few days monthly.
The plane will be ready (new interior, avionics, extra tank) late 2008.
The owner is a "millionaire" from the Middle East.
xxx
They ask me "how much" do I want for salary.
All expenses paid, hotel and meals...
Permanent position, little flying, maybe a few days monthly.
Find a 727 co-pilot, and flight engineer with maintenance background.
Will be based in Spain (or often will be there) -
They will pay the recurrent training for the crew, as needed.
I have no clues as to what to ask.
xxx
I have all type of licences and qualifications, you name it, got it...
FAA/JAR, TRE/TRI and of course 727 PIC rating, even F/E.
Worldwide experience, you name the place, been there...
xxx
I occasionally "moonlight" (free lance) i.e. ferry/deliveries of 747s...
Normally I ask US$500 per day + hotel and expenses.
When I supply a F/O and F/E, equal pay for them, same $500 (same effort).
Then I hear some "nerds" asking $1000/day to fly some executive jets.
Are they crazy, or am I out-of-line with the rates to apply...?
xxx
Any suggestions...?
Happy contrails

ITs not just the how much will you get paid, but the "when".... If you know the name of the company, do some research as to if they have a good record of paying people correctly and on time.....

My Friend,
Its time for a paradigm shift. You are selling your services way below what they are worth!
Many of us contract as our actual only job. The rates we set are reflective of all of the costs that we bear to maintain currency, pay taxes, healthcare and all of the other things permenant employees are given.
For instance a recurrents on the larger corporate jets run from around 20k-35k when all costs are factored in. At 500 dollars a day you'd have to work better than 60 days to before break even.
My advice take whatever it was that you were making as a captain (presumably) at whatever airline you were working at and add 20%. That's a good place to start.
Good luck to you I hope it works out for you!

The rate you were charging was WAY too low,Gulfstream contract rate is $1500 per day,you should be charging at least that for B747 work. You have been shafting yourself my friend. The advice of previous salary + 20% seems sensible (providing you were paid a sensible salary in the first place)

Just to put things into perspective when I free lanced on 727 10/12 years age as PIC I was paid $800.00 a day plus all expenses and remember that was 10/12 years ago.
Today I have to pay a King Air 200 pilots $500.00 a day plus expenses. International qualified Falcon 900EX/EASY pilots charge $800.00 to a $1,000.00 USD a day. It is not uncommon for G-V free lance pilots to receive $1,200.00 to $1,500.00 USD a day.
I recently hired a free lance pilot (PIC) for a Citation X for a three month contract, exclusive use, for $ 800.00 USD a day, with a 15 day a month guarantee plus expenses.
Now, these are all for US based aircraft.
Good Luck BelArg.

BelArgUSA..............is this a wind up??? Do you really think that you are worth only $500 per day........to a millionair who would like to enjoy travelling in the back of an aircraft in the confidence that he will actually arrive at his chosen destination safe and sound?? I don't know if I should run a mile or ask if you want a job?? Well good luck!!

With thanks...
Thanks a lot everyone -
Especially for educating me...

I have been (very infrequently) involved with flying of bizjets. mostly Learjets.
With the PanAm layoff, (NOV 1973) I used to be CFI for the Lear 23/24 and 25 type ratings...
After I quit, I stayed in touch with that industry.
Even got to fly 31A, 35/36, and the 55 (the 55 is a... dog, not a Lear).
xxx
I never knew much about "rates per day" or "salaries"...
When in the US, I often visit a FBO, as I know the owner, retired airline guy.
Talking to pilots, in conversations "yeah, a pilot of that plane can make one thousand bucks a day...!"
I thought they were joking. They know I fly 747. Always felt that they wanted to "impress me"...
I know in the US, there is a bit of "big airplane, big money" culture.
My airline pay is a fraction of that...
xxx
Then recently I heard about the cost of training at Flight Safety or Simuflite.
Some of these bizjet type ratings are $25,000, recurrent training $8,000...
Such prices are unheard of, in the airline industry.
xxx
You can get a 737 type rating (airline) for $7,000, recurrent for $1,500...
Why is BBJ training (same plane) 3 or 4 times more expensive...?
xxx
So now I come to my question about salary to fly a 727...
I heard that a pilot of a G-V can be paid $1,200 per day.
So I told myself, that is because of his training costs.
So I figured that my training costs are a fraction of his, so my salary should be fraction too.
I can get a 727 recurrent training for $1,500...
And my 727 is "big", yes maybe... but is a 40 years old junk metal...
xxx
Here in Argentina, with the airline, pilots are paid by seniority/longevity.
Not at all by size of airplane.
A 737 captain with 25 years seniority makes more money than me in 747 with only 14 years seniority.
xxx
Again, thank you for your assistance.
I will tell the millionaire $1,000/day or $12,000/month. Cash...
All expenses paid.
xxx
If I meet you guys, the beers are on me...
Happy contrails

I think you're still too low, for your own sake you'd better check what training costs, NOT airline training. 4-day recurrent $1500? I seriously doubt it. The instructors get $400/day! The simulator was expensive too, but I forget the hourly rate.
And don't forget hotels and food, transport and airlines!
