I agree it looks like some of the less well manicured parts of England but no - it's not in the UK. So far I haven't found any pictures of it in it's pomp

Alas alack - no.... this did see a lot of war-time service - and was used in another war in an incident that ruffled a few feathers at the time
About 50% of it has disappeared under buildings now

Ta Qali, Malta?
Not malta but I can see why you'd might think so - I have no information that this aircraft type ever operated from the challenge when it was at its busiest but it was involved in a later occasion here

Condor operating from occupied France shot down the aircraft carrying Leslie Howard.
Indeed - but the one in this case was at the challenge due to a beating it had taken from the good guys

Timbaki, Crete?
Bear is correct - Spain it is -
I'm not sure any Condors operated in Spain during the Civil War - the one in question turned up during WW2 - damaged over the Atlantic. It's possible the pilot knew of the challenge field tho' from the Guerra Civil and it was any port in a storm.
Current view

Time flies and I can confirm that teusje is correct with Aerodrome de Jarro, Navia in Asturias N Spain. Apparently very busy in the Civil War against the Basques and there was a small diplomatic incident when the Condor turned up in WW2 - the German flew in a repair team and it left for Merignac after a couple of days. The airfield was eventually handed back to the landowners in the '60's I think and has been largely redeveloped
