The F-27 in the foreground could be telling. The colour scheme is much like the Algerian but of course if it was Algiers it wouldn't be BP dishing out the juice! And are the Canberras British? They could be South African? That might fit with the BP bowser..... RR

Could it be Kano, Lagos ?

No 9 (Nigeria) Sqd. visited in 1960 and were accompanied by a 511 Sqd. Britannia.

The F-27 has the old East African colours which along with the Dak, Canberras and Brit with reference to Phil, suggests Embakasi though Nairobi has already been suggested and dismissed.

The EAAC F-27s entered service in late 1962, discounting the 1960 idea unfortunately. I agree, it is definietly an EAAC F-27 though. RR

I wonder whether its just Phil and not Liz as well so perhaps its independence for Kenya? Would the Canberras still be there then? Would the F27 be in service? Did Phil go anywhere else on that trip?

Good effort chaps but none correct. Some more clues for you.
The Canberras are from 32 Sqdn, which at the time, was based at Akrotiri.
We were there to do a fly past for a very important occasion.

Dar-es-Salaam at time of Tanganyika Independence Celebrations.
December 1961?

If so HRH arrived and eparted in a Heron of the Queen's Flight and flew it back to Athens and possibly onwards to UK, but this will demolish the Britannia clue.

PS a day later.

Widening the options further, the Duke of Edinburgh attended the Kenya Independence Celebrations in Nairobi two years later in December 1963 which could tie in with the F27 clue. During this visit the D of E also visited Zanzibar and the Sudan so those too are just possible, but on this occasion, according to the Dec 19th 1963 Court Circular, he returned by BOAC Comet.

So I'm stumped!

A good one so far Goudie

We appear to have stalled, so some more info. The occasion was this Country becoming independent. The Country's Leader, at the time of independence, appeared to dislike flies around him!

The only Fly-Whisk wielder I know of is Jomo Kenyatta and as Nairobi in the form of both Embakasi and Eastleigh have both been rejected I'm even more puzzled, but doubtless all will become clear.

Incorrect, sorry to say. Just about every African Commonwealth Country has been mentioned bar the correct one.

How about Dr. Banda Hastings of Malawi.

In which case the airport would be Chileka, Balantyre.

Bonriki International Airport, Tarawa, ICAO designator: NGTA, Republic of Kiribati, (Gilbert Islands) South Pacific. What made this challenge difficult was that the photo, a slide, was reversed.
