looks for all the world like a bomb casing
No, I was not looking for engine testing but concept (idea) testing. So why would any body make something look a bomb but...

I take that when you said that it was not a bomb you meant that it was not carrying or designed/meant to carry explosives. So no guided missile, not a sea mine. Nor a carrier of biological warhead.

I mean it was not to be meant to test guiding methods for bombs or cruising missiles....

One wanted to try how it would be seen or behave IF it were really a bomb....

How come you're into this "Unmanned" phase of life lately? Found a good website?
Not really mate, it's a pretty well known site. I put up the previous one rather than follow on with another Bipe and I guess LM did tha same for me today!

Reg,

I described it as looking like a bomb casing because that was the best way to describe its shape, which isn't too clear from this viewpoint. My "hidden clue was in a later post (#19312) and is connected to your radar cross-section suggestion!

I won't duck around the issue and confirm that it doesn't carry a warhead or any of the other possibilities you mention!

Not my words mate!!

But what you've drawn is pretty close to Reg's first shot, the Rheinmetal STN LUNA and what LM was referring to about the prop would still show.

Mine is rocket powered!

Edited to say that you're looking at the right post for the clue, but it's not that bit, tiz well hidden innit !

Hope it's a fighter pilots breakfast then - titanium plate sandwich with stainless steel nails filling.

TC,

If you are in a position to re-post, suggest it might be an idea.

A good idea mate, but I don't have that one here as you were still working on it when I left. Of course, if you can't, I imagine I could "Save as" off your post and upload it to my PB account.

My guess is that it was built to test a radar guidance system, and the powerplant was to drive the hardware, not to propel it. The high aspect ratio wings could be because they swing out from on top of the fueslage after launch. Of course, I could be completely wrong...

Reg,
Correct, it was a Decoy, but rocket powered and not towed.

Mechta,
Correct about the wings, but it wasn't for testing and the rocket was to propel it.

Convair GAM-71 "Buck Duck"?

Or perhaps in this case, the XGAM-71...

Hard luck Reg, the McDonnell ADM-20 Quail was preceded by this one!

It was indeed the Convair GAM-71 "Buck Duck" or XGAM for the prototype as skytrain suggests. Well done

skytrain10 has control
