Any other jet fighters of the period do that? Desperate measure to extend the range?

Bill Petters' design of the staggered engine layout in a thin fuselage precluded fuel tanks in the fuselage. The thin wing didn't help. He knew that with two thirsty Avons it would be very limited on range. However, it was not designed as a fighter, as many people think.

It was born as a point-to-point interceptor - ie up, launch, home.

The early versions (F1, F1A, F3) had a small jettisonable fuselage ventral tank. The F2A and F6 had a much larger non-jettisonable ventral tank.

I don't know of any others which did that.

Enough distraction, I'm off back to your challenge.

Suggest Aeroflot stewardesses then.

How's your SATURDAY shaping up mate? You don't want to waste the day with your arse on a computer chair, do you? Want some clues...get it over and done with? Looks like it's only you and me anyway.

I'm impressed - you've got the correct day!

We are expecting a telephone engineer here any time up until 1300 (that's 2200 your time), so I've got to sit around for a while.

Well I'm going to give you a clue anyway, you've been a good SC customer for a long time now.

Same nationality as No.8.

I looked at that but stupidly dismissed it as the engines looked too thin.

An unusual photo indeed you sod.

Thanks Graeme,

Good challenge, I thought it may have come from the Fright Archives so checked there first, rather than actually trying to ID it (lazy sod), but it didn't, or at least I couldn't find it and resorted to the hard way.

You didn't spot this in my message last night!

BTW, I usually manage to get an hour or so on Saturday mornings, so put up another goodun; but I'll bet LM will be there first with his shiney new phone line!!
I only got in twenty minutes ago and have to go in a a couple of hours, so it'll have to be another Open House I'm afraid.

You will be safe tomorrow though!!

First thought is one of those wacky Russian designs from the mid-nineties?
