Morning Graeme. Yes he was but clearly not a Stirling. It was the Short S.31, a 2/3 prototype of the Stirling with 130hp pobjoy niagaras (decieving aren't they LM!).

Here she is in RAF colours...

Your control Graeme!
(and you have the same photo as me - not from Flight though!)

Thanks Martin. Found the photo in Aeroplane Monthly. I like the "grainy" appearance of your challenge photo and have attempted something similar...

Thanks mate. The "grain" came with it! It is a scan of a small image in a wartime recognition book (Saville-Sneath).

Is yours a Ryan????

Exactly, that's my point, dispense with high resolution images, mines a similar scan from a small photo...but not a Ryan.

Thanks Mel. Like teusje, I thought it to be the S.42. I was convinced there was a bomb rack at the strut junction but proving just how dumb I can be, I kept googling "S.42 with bombs" believing that it had a wartime career. Only when you said otherwise did I start looking for alternatives. The power of suggestion? Very nice challenge mate!

New "grainy" one...

The shadow looks like the Turkish THK-11 but I'm not convinced about the actual machine

If not the T.H.K.11 then it is possibly the S.E.C.A.N. Type S.U.C.10 Courlis (Curlew).
