No mate, isn't that a parasol?
The biplane used for this experiment also had a number and a name which also had a metal connection in an avian sort of way

Yes, It's a parasol. But it also has a nine-cylindes radial, and one of them was modified for Fraulain Hanna for high-altitude meteorolgical flights, so i just thought...

Good afternoon Brian,
indeed it is the BMW-FW44-J (Oestrich) Motorjet
An Fw 44 Stieglitz (Goldfinch) powered by a Bramo 325 Barium piston engine fitted with a four-bladed axial blower disk with a diameter of 1.47m, which was enclosed in a nacelle, which itself could be altered in flight to compensate for speed and altitudes. In 1938 under the direction of Dr Hermann Oestrich a team at BMW started to make a completely flyable Motorjet engine, in this they were successful. Another engine was made using the Bramo 329 piston engine but the results were not so satisfactory, further research was done by Dr Oestrich into the combination piston/jet engine, but no other engines were made.
evansb has control
Edited to say; good timing too, as I'm just about to sit down to dinner Catchya later gentlemen

Good evening Graeme,
I know you've been working, but hope you had a good ANZAC Day!
Yup, it is an early jet engine in the back mate
Edited to answer your second question, it was to be a Whittle W.1A, but I'd better add it's British, coz we gave some of those to the Yanks to play with!!
