North Weald Fly-In
Spent today at North Weald fly-in event. Publicity for this was almost non existent, nothing even on the North Weald website! Was an OK event, nothing special.
Strong winds and cloud cover ruled out many visiting aircraft making an appearance, but it was a shame that the new Spitfire, and resident Mustang couldn't have even been presented on the flightline. Lots of interesting stuff based there, but only JPs flew. Room for improvement.
Finally, a big thankyou to Richard, and everyone else at Swords Aviation for their hospitality today.

Daniel,It was my privelege to fly Hairyplanes Miles Magister to this event.Today was a challenging day to fly any light aircraft let alone a vintage type.The blustery winds made the take offs and landings very challenging.In many ways it would have been easier to have stayed on the ground however having assesed the forecasts and concluded the flights could be undertaken safely we decided to attend to support the organisers and the supported charity.This event does seem to suffer from the weather but thats just luck.I met lots of great people and some old friends.North Weald like Old Warden is one of our aeronautical treasures I value it greatly and we will all miss it if the unthinkable happens.Given light winds and a sunny day I,m sure the event would have been very different but thats aviation for you.Would have been nice to see a few more stands and stalls but as always a great joy to visit this lovely historic site.Nice pic of the maggie!!.

Daniel, Nice Pics! I'm glad you felt Swords Aviation treated you OK especially as you provide great pics for their site!!
In general the Fly-in was fairly expensive at £9 normal price. Even though the wind kept some away we (as GA) need to encourage enthusiasts to come to these events as they are great supporters of keeping historic aircraft flying. Lets face it - GA (especially ex-mil jets) have enough enemies! It was a shame the Spit and the remaining mustang were not out - they would have made some for some nice pics. The Hurricane was fantastic though!

It's unfortunately the nature of events like this that weather can have such a huge impact on them. However, considering how blowy it was, there were still a fair number of people there. I managed to keep my parents interested for most of the day - starting with the memorial service and leaving shortly after the Hurricane's display on departure. Unfortunately, we didn't get across to the flight line in time to see the Miles Magister up close.
