Gatwick Air Displays

Hello all,

Does anyone here (who is a little older than myself) have any recollection of any air displays at Gatwick in the late 40's early 50's?

Thanks

Charlie

The Daily Express sponsored an International Air Pageant at Gatwick in 1949. I wasn't there (three years old then) but it was memorable for the debut of the Pitts Special in Britain — Betty Skelton's Little Stinker which had been shipped across the Atlantic aboard the Queen Mary. From memory, I think Al Williams' Grumman G22 Gulfhawk II, now in the NASM, and the Fulton Airphibian roadable aircraft also took part.

Hot Charlie.....

Can't help with late 40's/early 50's, but as a diversion, would recommend this fascinating video clip that you can download free. It will automatically open in MediaPlayer:-

"Gatwick Air Display: 27/06/1938"

Go to 'www.britishpathe.com' on this LINK

Put GATWICK into the 'Search' box and look for the above file.

Caution: The search engine on this site is a bit all over the place sometimes, in terms of relevance. If no sign of file, repeat process.

Lots of other Gatwick nostalgia there.

.....BST.
