So to put last night's debacle into layman's terms @sunnySA, overnight last night between 1245 and 1915 UTC (2245-0515L), Brisbane became an island. All surrounding en-route airspace (Fraser and Bryon) groups were closed. No Air Traffic Services provided, and access across these areas facilitated only through crossing through Temporary Restricted Areas that are intended for use only in the event of a catastrophic failure in the air traffic system (like an ATS burning down). MEDEVAC and freighter aircraft will go through, but most passenger aircraft will cancel their flights because there's no ability to operate in the safety of controlled airspace. Technically the airspace isn't closed, so airservices senior executives can hand on heart say the airspace is open. Is that deceiving the public (and the Minister)? Well, it's not fully a lie, and any journos reading it wouldn't understand the nuance of it I guess, but if passenger flights aren't going through because there's no service, that sounds like it's closed to me!

I've heard the holes in those two rosters were known about weeks in advance. Does this suggest that the air traffic controllers have had a complete collapse in confidence of the senior management when they've been asked to cover on ever more overtime? I struggle to imagine how the senior executive team at airservices retain their positions.

In the case you mention they must have flown through as no other way in or out of Brizvegas ? and nothing in the Sunday papers/internet on mass cancellations or delays or upset pax/crews/airlines ?

At least 4 departures after 10:00pm from Brisbane most nights:
Eva, Qatar, VietJet, Singair and Emirates. The latter 4 depart after 10:45.

Jetstar, Virgin, Emirates and Cathay have arrivals in that same timeframe.

I believe so, perhaps 1 or 2 additional arrivals depending on tracks flown. WebTrack used and not FR24.

Interesting so seemingly they dont go through when they can divert around the airspace but do when there is no other way in or out ? More a $ thing than a safety risk thing ?
