Interesting that British Airways are planning a similar cadet scheme to Jetstar's....
British Airways to recruit 800 pilots.
The airline, which currently has 3,200 pilots, is looking to recruit 800 more by 2016.
Half will come through the British Airways Future Pilot Programme, which will see the airline underwriting their training costs of around £100,000.
However the new recruits will be expected to repay the money over seven years. This will be done by offering a lower starting salary than the £40,000 newly qualified pilots would normally expect.
There have been fears within aviation of a pilot shortage, with many potential recruits being put off entering the industry by the cost of training.
The remainder will join BA either from other airlines or having served in the armed forces. The latter group will get a training programme tailored to enable pilots to embark on a career in commercial aviation.
The airline is using YouTube as a recruitment tool to broaden the source of potential recruits.
Captain Robin Glover, head of pilot recruitment at British Airways, said: "The Future Pilot Programme is a fantastic opportunity for anyone, from any background to realise their ambition of becoming a pilot and flying for British Airways.
"By removing the barrier of initial training costs and making it more accessible to a wider range of people, we hope to be able to attract the very best talent out there."
