Question Transition Altitude.

Short message from a wannabe ATCO, does the trans alt vary over the UK for different airports/regions?

The future is bright, it's black & white

Hi Geordie (won't hold that against you though!)

The answer is yes - outside controlled airspace in the UK the TA is 3000'. Inside is a different matter altogether. 3000' is still the case in most control zones around airports, but some have a higher one - 6000' being the case in my neck of the woods. As far as I understand it the reason is to make handling of large volumes of traffic at lower levels easier (not having to constantly work out which FL is separated from your altitudes.
