Malawian press reports it was a military helicopter, if the number of people on board is correct it can only be the AS532. Reportedly unable to reach destination due wx, (fog ?), went missing after turning around to return to Lilongwe.

Heavy fog, no ILS. What were they thinking?

When the Life Long President flew internally with the National airline , we would have three aircraft at the ready, reasons Tech failure and threat.
Returning to Chileka, as a supernumerary, I asked the Capt how he knew where we were, he pointed as he said watch, as the ADF (NDB signal) swung around he knew exactly where we were and descended through cloud to Chileka approach, natural gifted pilots; most were S. African, even on the BNI, doing the postal run to Maputo.
The airline had the highest standards in those 1970's days.
Very surprised this flight was now operated by the Air Force and have many doubts as to the reason for this 'accident.

I had wondered about the aircraft being described as "helicopter" in early reports, too.

Upon looking, I discovered FlightGlobal reported that the plane was a Dornier 228 (MAF-T03) operated by the Malawi Army Air Wing of the Malawi Defence Force

Edit: Oops. treadigraph identified it two days ago in post #3.

Don't always get a fire when a plane crashes.
