Dear Colleagues,

I have a question on the historical Cold War navigation system used by the West German Luftwaffe on-board the F-104G and Fiat G.91R/3. The visible parts of the system apparently consisted of the Mk 3B PHI (Position and Homing Indicator), the DRA-12A Doppler navigation radar and the NCU (Nav Control Unit?) flight plan cartridge receptacle in the cockpit. Does anyone know the full nomenclature of this system, particularly its NCU flight planning part and the original manufacturer of the setup?

There is a Youtube video titled "F-104G Starfighter - Inside The Cockpit" where the PHI and NCU are depicted at 18:25 and 24:15.

Any hints on these systems are welcome.

In the Australian Mirage III community, the PHI was known as the ‘Pure Horsesh*t Indicator’. :}

Do you know the exact nomenclature and the maker of the PHI used in Aussie Mirages?

The Aussie Mirage IIIO’s were fitted with the PHI-5C-3 system. Don’t know who made them.
