Must have been hard for the government to accept that the citizens had full right to their protests of Covid Zero. It looks like one of the last remaining hermit kingdoms has chosen to open up. This will be a nightmare across the world when the escape of millions of infected citizens with many new variants hit international shores.

Infections up north are astronomical and only going up exponentially. This won't be a good outcome for anyone.

I also have to add that with 19.5k cases today that per capita HK is outranking every other country in the world (other than china who are blatantly hiding their numbers). Congrats to the Department of Health for their wonderful waste of the last 3 years!

Completely agree. What’s a waste of time and face saving. Think twice about coming to this hell hole.

just because the Commies give in doesn't mean other countries are going to allow them in..... apparently the Japanese just announced some sort of precautionary restrictions against China Hk and Macau.....:}

Sadly, the only reason China is now opening its borders is to flood the world with Covid cases again, and new variants, to dilute the effect of it's own domestic high numbers. Bastards. This could get nasty.

hyg - other countries are far too soft and/or woke to ban Mainlanders from entry. A la February 2020.

All you read in the media is how great it is that people can travel TO China without quarantine, but why the hell would you want to? What's being glossed over is the real danger of people travelling OUT of China.

A few more country following Japan.
They definitely don’t have a problem opening and why not sharing the pain with a bit of Covid export.

Flights out of china are being sold out en masse. Just wait for the new year to see the world suffering again. As Clog has said... This will all just make everyone somewhat forget how bad it is in China right now.

Pointless- the rest of the world has HAD all the varieties which only now are being visited on the Chinese people

We've either been immunised or we've had Covid - it's the poor people in China who are having to do all the catching up now - in a system that has resolutely refused to learn from the awful experiences outside

Are you sure what the Chinese have is what everyone else has given the fantastic track record the Chinese had with revealing the truth:mad:

Yes the f@ckers did such a great job visiting it on the rest of the planet. So quite frankly keep it to yourselves and your zero Covid policy and foxtrot Oscar. And travel bans to all PRC dwellers. The western world won’t recover from the economic and collateral damage within a decade. We learned to live with it some time ago. Let them do the same. Then travel; if they must.

What a bunch of crying ladies, not even once coming here to say something nice. What a **** life you must be living, so sorry for you.

I’d save your sympathy for those still stuck in that Sh@thole. Either north or south of Lo Wu.
The PRC’s economy with the truth has cost hundreds of thousands of lives lost. Jobs gone. Economy’s (individual and governmental). stuffed. And no one holding them to account.

China doesn't want another Tiananmen Square type protest, the leaders are old enough to remember the 1989 massacre. Unfortunately they now have to go through the same pain as other countries did early on with the health system overwhelmed and a daily death total likely to be around 5000. Things could have been different had their vaccine been more effective and the vaccination rate higher.

Requiring tests from travellers originating in China simply ensures that the health system in the country of arrival won't be burdened with more sick people, COVID is now endemic worldwide and allowing Chinese travellers in won't make any difference, new varieties may appear and vaccines will be adjusted just like they are for the flu.

China's unelected government have bungled the handling of Covid-19 on an epic scale and cost millions of lives worldwide.

From ignoring the risks posed by "Wet Markets" in Wuhan, their suppression (and death) of Dr Li Wenliang, and their utterly naive "zero covid policy". It is a lesson in mega- incompetence.

I'm glad their people have been released from their prolonged imprisonment and I wish them a swift return to normality, however it has been made far more painful due to their unelected government's horrific bungling.

Why not ban all travelers from China for the next three months? Let Covid rip through China like we all knew it eventually would, when the masses have recovered then allow them to travel again. They created this mess, let them live with it now.

Absolutely Dilbert. That's precisely what should be happening.

Sadly, the 1st world is too woke and soft to make that call. At least Japan has got the balls, but no way that's going to happen further west.

They can come in. Just provide a negative covid test pre departure. Then one on arrival. And wait for the results on a plastic stool in the airport. Then 3 weeks Q in a shipping container. And wear a tracking bracelet.

I have lived and worked in China a few times. It is a great place with awesome people. Information about China from Western media outlets is not very accurate. Informstion about halfway between Western and Chinese outlets is as close to accurate as you can find.

So now that the virus is Ripping in China, time to open up and spread it all over the world again .. we’ve seen this movie before. The West just bends over and takes it every chance it can from China.. unfortunately this time for the CCP most of the rest of the world has developed immunity. Either way…The real problem is We need leadership .. missing for a while now.

And that right there will be Cathay/HKG's Niche. Rather be lucky than good any day. Hang on, luck runs out if you can't crew the jets. And the tarts are pissed. Can't wait to read management update on this one. "Taking great care to select appropriate opportunities for reactivation....."

From the New York Times:
The Biden administration, fearful that a surge of coronavirus infections in Beijing could spawn a new and more dangerous variant, announced on Wednesday that it will require travelers from China, including Hong Kong and Macau, to present negative Covid-19 tests before entering the United States.

The requirement will take effect on Jan. 5, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which made the announcement. Officials at the agency say they are deeply concerned over China’s lack of transparency about its outbreak — and, in particular, its failure to track and sequence variants and subvariants that are circulating within its borders.

C.D.C. officials said the requirement for testing will apply to air passengers regardless of their nationality and vaccination status. It will also apply to travelers coming from China who enter the United States through a third country, or who connect through the United States to other destinations. Italy and Japan have already imposed similar restrictions, and India has mandated negative Covid-19 test reports and random screening at airports for passengers arriving from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand.

January 5 will surely be mostly symbolic, i.e. way too late to make any real difference.

Not only did they hitch their wagon, they got on their knees and showed a lot of love towards the CCP

Right, The CCP caved in due to a few thousand people protesting:rolleyes::rolleyes: and covid transmission does not already exist outside of China and oh, never mind about the XBB 1.5 variant now dominant through the US.
