I think that my laptop may have the KLEZ.E virus. I want to call the helpdesk, but there are some programs listed in the add/remove programs bit of the control panel that I have obviously removed without using uninstall, as the uninstall tool cant delete them. They are sitting in the list of programs to uninstall, and may look a bit bad if the IT support person sees them (screeensavers from FHM etc etc) Is there any way I might be able to remove traces of their existence, so that I can call the helpdesk without worry? Thanks for any help you may be able to give. I am running Win NT 4

You could reinstall the programs, then uninstall them properly using add/remove programs in the control panel. Although this will not remove all trace, sometimes empty folders are left behind or the uninstall program is left etc. To remove the Klez virus try looking at the thread thats on this forum for info on how to do it yourself.
Alternatively, just deny all knowlage ;)

If you are using Control Panel:Add/Remove Programs when you select an item and click Uninstall and the system cannot (because you uninstalled it previously or in another manner) doesn't it give you the option to remove the particular item from the CP List?
