Sennheiser 25 or 45 KAS

Hi Everybody,

I am debating myself between sennheiser Active noise reduction headphones. I don´t know if I should go for the Open ear cup model, or instead pick the larger one which is probably more uncomfortable but much more efficient when it comes to reducing noise.
I would also like to know from anyone that has the 45 model (open) if it makes a big difference, and if its worth it. I have tried the 25, and they work great but I if you don´t have a hot mic between the two pilots they seem out of place, thank you for your opinions.

I recently bought the 25-KAS I can say they're great. The beauty of having a closed cup is that they provide some passive noise reduction. So if the batteries run out, you still get some relief from the noise. It isn't that noticeable at FL390 but at FL250 it makes a difference. (the Passive NR, the ANR is very obvious at all flight levels)

You don't need the "S" version unless you have a stereo jack. I bought it just because I could. I don't need it but you never know... :)

In my old airline we did extensive tests to determine the best headsets and the best way to wear them. In the end it mainly comes down to personal preference. The best noise cancelling/reduction varieties are certainly the best for long term hearing protection. Crew procedures may have to be adapted.

I have the open-ear -45s, and they work great for me. Easier to move partly off the ear for in-cockpit conversations without hot mic. Weight and size for stowage/carrying are good, too.

I use the HMEC 25. The ANR makes quite a difference, especially if both pilots are wearing them. Overall, very happy, but they are heavy on batteries!

Hmmm... Batteries in mine last about a month (pair of AAs).

I have both (one bought myself, one provided by new employer) - I find the "closed" one more comfortable, especially when wearing sunglasses. Both work great in the Citations we fly. My batteries (Varta 10 minute quick rechargeable AA) last roughly 20 hours flying time. As pointed out, the 25 gives some passive protection.
