View Full Version : Sunshine breaks from Germany (as a Brit)

During the course of this year I am going to have to spend about 4 x 3-week trips in Frankfurt on business. Much as I like Germany, at this time of the year it is COLD!! So it occurred to me that Germany must have last minute sunshine-weekend breaks the same as the UK does. Does anyone have experience of these? How easy it is to book? I have gone to a couple of websites (lastminute etc) but they all presume I am departing from the UK and of course my start-point will be Frankfurt! Any suggestions, websites or links for sensible online booking would be greatly welcomed!! :ok:

From experience at Trier (the friendly place in Germany where the LUXies do their weekend shopping :ok: ), I can safely say that
- positively all travel agencies advertise last minute breaks, sold "over the counter" (there MUST be a travel agency SOMEWHERE in Frankfurt),
- the most popular dedicated last-minute-outfit appears to be "L'Tur" (they're both on the High Street in Germany, and on the Web here (http://www.ltur.de/) in German, French, Polish or Dutch, no English website available)
Bottom line: booking is fairly easy, but obviously there will be lots of Germans on your plane :E

If my memory doesn't lie, there are last minute break sellers in terminal one at FRA. Somewhere on the upper level above the LH check in desks.
Some friends of mine booked a nice w/e in the Canaries from there a year or so back. Sounds quite exciting turning up at the airport with your passport, credit card and toothbrush not knowing where you might end up. Not everyone's cup of tea but...

I can recommend www.start.de . I had to get a flight to SYD (a bit far for a weekend, but you get the idea) pronto and they got me out the next day at a fraction of the price others quoted. We've used them to go to other places too, and they never disappoint.
Bizarrely, Iberia's website got us a dogleg to Malaga and back from Casablanca for less than a round trip to CAS!
LH used to auction mystery flights, we took a couple to Italy, to our complete satisfaction.
That said, don't neglect the Vaterland later in the year.
You can make a 'Butterfahrt' sail from Lübeck to Denmark three times in a weekend and splurge on duty free.
The JU52 flight is expensive, but something to boast about now that Concorde is gone.
Good luck, and enjoy your visits to FRA - I was there for five years.
Another tip - get a .de credit card (or access to one) if you can - to make online bookings more straightforward.

I would put in a vote for Bavaria. I worked in Munich for 18 months and it is a great city. I was there for ten days in December and had a good time.
Even if the weather is not hot, there is so much to see, both in the city and in the surrounding area. The train from FRA to MUC is quick and frequent and prices reasonable. If you want some specific iddeas and places (all decent and honest, I assure you ;) ) then just PM.
In the summer, Bavaria gets VERY hot. Temps of 28/30 C are common. I got my b*m very sunburnt in the summer of 1999 in the Englischer Garten.

Thank you again to all who responded. In the end I booked a flight with Opodo.co.uk as Cyprus Airways doesn't offer an e-ticket option so I needed to give an address for paper ticket delivery. Having booked the flight I then decided to fix accommodation and did this through Expedia as it was marginally cheaper than Opodo for the same place. Of course, NOW I know I should have booked both flight and hotac together to ensure best price! Anyway, I am happily encsonced in Frankfurt and looking forward to my weekend away! Temps today here were about 5C and in Larnaca about 18C so not hot exactly but deffo warmer than Canaries and N Africa!! :E :E
