bmi to introduce A319
Sorry if this is old news.
bmi has renegotiated with Airbus Industrie to change an existing order for an A320 to an A319 which will be delivered in 2004 as G-MIDN. Although a very similar aircraft it seems a little strange to just have 1 in the fleet.

Not really so strange.
As midland release their Boeing 737-500 series to 'baby' the least number of seats available will be 156 on the Airbus A320.
A 100+ seater is req'd for the thinner routes, and as the Fokkers disappear as their leases expire , a 319 is ideal.
Expect to see more of the same as LHR goes all Airbus !!

I completely agree but will just one A319 really offer much flexibility? I think bmi may be taking the aircraft with the view to seeing how it performs and then ordering more in the future, perhaps returning larger aircraft. However, by 2004 who knows what the industry will be like?

It's not at all unusual for new aircraft to come from different sources (and still be equipped to the airline's requirements). Thus, this 319 should soon be accompanied by others from different sources and I am sure bmi is currently negotiating with various potential lessors and Airbus itself for more aircraft.
