Harold knows his stuff…but generally as the airport expands ..I would think a negative monthly passenger figure is slightly disappointing?

April CAA Stats
Terminal Passengers 17,684
Aircraft Movements 1,466
Aberdeen 887
Amsterdam 8,626
Alicante 2,914
Palma 2,523
Faro 2,543
Cardiff 82
Stanstead 78
Southampton 31
Passenger numbers are slightly down compared to April 2023 this is due to the way the weeks fell, meaning one less return flight a week for the Ryanair routes. So nothing to be really worried about.
Numerous days with bad weather also affected passenger numbers with some cancellations, also weather affected aircraft movements.
Aberdeen route seeing an increase, even with the diverted Newcastle flight. Though May figures will take a hit with the gap from Loganair leaving and Eastern starting. But future looking much better for the route with twice daily flights from September, so numbers are going to rebound a fair bit.
Amsterdam route is on the increase once again, even with weather cancellations and lower capacity aircraft to begin with. The extra flights on a weekend certainly boosting the numbers on the route.
Hopefully KLM will see the numbers generated by the extra flights and fingers crossed decide to keep them on after the Eastern lease in finishes.

Felt a bit deflated by the stagnant/declining passenger numbers so for reassurance and to view it in context I have looked at our competitors, EDI, NCL, LBA and MAN. They are showing increases of 5%, 9%, 13% and 3% respectively compared with our 15% reduction. Now wish I hadnt looked. Stats lifted directly off the CAA site.
Grumpy, how does 304 passengers short of previous April result in 15% reduction. Your not good at maths are you.
April 2023 17,988
April 2024 17,684
304 less passengers against previous year.
Now if we hadn't lost flights because of the weather, then that is the shortfall accounted for. So we could have been slightly ahead if it wasn't for the weather.
I've just had a quick count for aircraft seating capacity operated during May.
If I have counted correctly there was capacity of 29,083 seats were on offer on 261 flights during May. I've not counted any private charters into it.

As stated, the percentages quoted are copied from the CAA site so not my maths. I hadn't realised that our competitors use a different calendar to us or dont have weather issues, perhaps the same way that they apparently wernt impacted by Covid!
Rather than obsess by a few percent rise or fall should the concern not be another year with no significant growth?

TBH I'm sat here with the popcorn waiting for Grumpy to come back at Harold 😂
A observation…I know it technically means nothing..but while burning the midnight oil on FR24….
The airport has/had 12 scheduled arrivals on Saturday and Sunday..height, almost of the summer season.
Newcastle have 13 arrivals between 0001 and 0530 ! On Sunday morning alone.
Just thinking how far behind and how much further the airport needs to go to develop its product?
Last year it was 10 arrivals..

All you can do is compare it against the laid out plans and has there been improvement.
So on those points.
1. Improvement- Yes
2. Ahead of where they wanted to be on Passenger numbers - no
3. Ahead on movements - don't know
4. Ahead on financials - yes at the last set of accounts
So is it better than what they wanted? I would say yes as the important thing is making money and they are ahead on where they hoped to be.
Does it need to develop its product yes, but so does any airport, if you don't any airport will lose out, just some need to keep pushing and others need to tweak their offering and keep it upto date.
Seems a recurring question though highwide that i would expect you to know the answer to.
Movements are only of any relevance if they are generating additional revenue. As the majority are by residents like Draken and the flying schools, who I would expect to be on annual deals, don't think they will be making much difference
In respect of Onions comments:
You certainly cant and never will be able to compare MME with our near neighbours but they are growing post Covid and despited Brexit but we appear to be stagnant if not declining when growth was promised. Also seems like the Mayor is again back peddling on the new routes he promised.
Improvement? Well the revamped terminal is certainly great. The inability to recruit and retain ATC and fire crew is worrying but MME is certainly not alone with this problem.
Ahead of were we expected? In terms of promissed pax numbers, agree that we are miles behind and will probably never get close to the promised numbers.
Movements? As has been explained, pretty much irrelevant other than a distraction from disapointing pax numbers.
Financials? Let's see if we get a new government who properly opens the books and dont hide behind obscure accountancy. I actually fear what may happen if the average voter, who couldn't care less about crappy holiday flights, finds out how much is being shelled out to keep Ryanair here.
Development? Well it now seems that the Willis village was just a fantasy and the ongoing issues with the stalled South Side suggest that other than a hand full of paint sprayers the masive investment has not even given a significant return in respect of new jobs.
Lord H may be sweetening us up for a sell off to a foreign developer so we may get the houses and the industrial units afterall.......
