Flight path PVG - SYD

My friend is flying on MU561, PVG to SYD.

One thing I noticed is the flight path it takes.

China Eastern (MU) #561 ? FlightAware

If you look at the flight flown on 6th May, it flew an extra 1000 miles off the planed route.

Now I know this could be due to weather fly around a storm etc... but what I am more interested in is the planned flight path.

Looking at other days this planned flight path starts at PVG but then flies aways down the east coast of China to above Hong Kong before finally pointing directly towards Sydney and flying over the South China sea. Just curious why this flight path? Is it to do with waypoints or jet streams as to why they don't fly directly towards SYD and flying over Taiwan instead?

Seems a big diversion and I know airlines don't like flying more K's then they have to especially when its an extra 1000 miles or so than it could be.

Cheers

I too have been puzzled by some apparently irrational routings to/from China, and would be very interested to hear an explanation from someone who knows

Just looked at routing for QF130 PVG/SYD which goes out over the ocean then turns south well to the east of Taiwan. Also, most Taiwan airports have direct connections to most mainland cities these days so I would guess overflying would not be a real problem. Perhaps the reason could be that China Eastern aircraft/crews are not certified for long trans ocean flights.
