The UK's big 4
Do we know how the order is going to change over the next 23 years between the 4 biggest UK airports - LHR, LGW, STN and MAN?
I know that T5 is to open and if the new Heathrow East is developed with an extra runway and Heathrow T6 was erected, the airport would then have a capacity for 115 million passengers per annum. This would probably be achieved with all of the A380s that will be visiting with SQ, EK, QR, VS etc.
According to MAN's plan, they want to raise passenger numbers to 38 million by 2015 and to 50 million by 2030. This would be very ambitious, but if MAN were to more long haul services from the US and especially India and China, the airport could meet it's targets.
LGW has been told by BAA that it will not be developed in the next few years and could also loose traffic to LHR as the Open Skies agreement comes into force and with the major LHR expansion planned. Although, if LGW is sold in the BAA investigation (with MAG probably the main buyers), then things could be completely different for the airport.
Finally, STN, predicted by BAA to reach 35 million passengers by 2030. This may seem realistic but other reports suggest 50 million with a capacity for 90 million with a second runway. Obviously, 90 million is a looong time away, and official reports say 35 million. FR and EZY currently supply STN with 85% of their traffic and they have become a little annoyed over the past few weeks with the increase in charges at the airport and FR have said they are reducing services this winter and may move aircraft elsewhere to places such as LTN which could be a dampener on STN. Things are looking good for the airline though on the Long Haul front with the double daily service to JFK with AA.
Ok then, overall, by 2030:
1. LHR upto 115 million
2. MAN 50 million
3. STN 38 million
4. LGW 34 million
WOW!
