The runway operating length will not be any greater than it is now! The additional bits added on are to meet the recommended over run requirements which may become mandatory. The cost of this extension was on the grounds of safety not to attract larger aircraft.

If the larger orange or Irish LC carriers were going to come they would have been here by now..............

The number of times flights are full is few and far between and if numbers fall month on month all operators will reduce frequency.

You could argue that flights are not full as the last fares sold are higher than the customer is prepared to pay (or is used to paying).

So back to use it or lose it

IOM-LCY mid-day rotation has gone
Erm...it hasn't gone completely. I just got off it and it looked pretty full to me.

A380 over IOM!

The "A380 on UK Flying Visit" thread says that on Saturday 5 September the A380 in question will be doing a flypast at Belfast City Airport at 1440 and at Broughton-Chester at 1508. Knowing where the Isle of Man is, I wonder therefore whether we might see it overhead the Island at around, say, 1452. Let's hope, if so, it's not too high. Probably the closest one will ever get to Ronaldsway...

Delays for the winter?

If we get a low cloudbase, we could be in for a season of delays and diversions. Due to the current wip at Ronaldsway, a NOTAM, effective Friday, gives the minima for the approach onto 26 (Non precision - as no Glide Path) having just risen from 410' (+50) to 830' (+50)!!! This is due to the temp displaced threshold and re-position of the papi's further down the runway, whilst the procedure and hence 'original' datum have not been altered. Great! Wonder if this was the cause for the GLA-IOM diversion on the 31st? From the airport website:
BE6817 Glasgow BE Flybe 17:35 Diverted To Glasgow, Probably loads more to come. Edited to add Monday morning's disruption so far:
RE373 Dublin RE Aer Arann 10:00 Estimated 12:20
EY7123 Dublin EY ETIHAD 10:00 Estimated 12:20
SI831 Guernsey Jersey SI blueislands 11:30 Diverted To Liverpool
BE7343 Manchester BE Flybe 11:30 Delayed
BE164 Luton BE Flybe 12:30 Delayed
BE7334 Gatwick BE Flybe 12:50 Cancelled
SI832 Guernsey Jersey SI blueislands 11:55 Delayed
BE7346 Manchester BE Flybe 13:30 Cancelled
RE805 London City RE Aer Arann 13:35 Delayed
BE7335 Gatwick BE Flybe 13:40 Cancelled
BE7348 Manchester BE Flybe 16:15 Cancelled
BE7347 Manchester BE Flybe 15:30 Cancelled
BE1374 Southampton BE Flybe 15:55 Cancelled

A winter of discontent on the way!

Currently METAR EGNS 311120Z 21020KT 6000 -RA FEW003 OVC004 16/15 Q1004 NOSIG=

Should do wonders for the Steam Packet weekend traffic once Joe Public cottons on to what is happening. I'm at a loss to understand why this phase of the work is happening at this time of the year. Chaos is inevitable, and one wonders how long it will be before the airlines start looking for compensation.

Well looking at the forecast for the rest of the week, the should have hit the fan by Friday.

No doubt the ever so modest Airport Director will be making a statement shortly. Maybe they will reduce charges for the duration

I wonder if the media are aware of the problem? Joe Public will just slag off the airlines, you can hear it now, bl**dy Flybe cancelled again. They probably don't know it's the airport's fault!

Ain't just the increase in OCA that will cause problems, the approach lighting has been switched off as well. When you are scabbling around in the murk on an NDB apporach with an offset approach track the last thing you want is an invisible runway . We only found it by following the coast today (Loganair from BHD).

The fan was well and truly covered in Merde today!

Poor Flybe really did try their very best to get folk where they wanted to be tonight, but faced an almost impossible task. 7 cancellations at lunchtime. The problem was the cloud was below the new minima and above the old one...guess which operators are still using the old minima?

Safety is Flybe's prime concern and they are going to get a bashing no doubt unless a compromise is found soon.

The numbers are actually 660ft for Cat A aircraft- possible the LETs as they are really slow! 760ft (plus 50) for CAT B like the ATR72 and only 830+50 for the CAT C Q400 and EMB. It's actually the circling minima for the 21 break procedure.

Don't think anyone can use the old minima now as it's not the system minimum that's the problem, it's the increased OCA/H which becomes more limiting if above system minimum. Cat A aircraft will have a 100' advantage but that's it. However they may possibly be able to go VFR below in certain circumstances.

2 Questions -

Dash - you refer to the "circling minima for the 21 break procedure" I can see the correlation but isn't that just the figure for south of 08/26 centreline, or has an agreement been reached internally to use that figure for a circling manoevre on to 21?

Also can someone clarify what the +50 is and why doesn't it seem to be applying to Cat A?

Does all this only apply to 26? and does anyone have any idea how long it is scheduled to last?

Fragul:

50' is Position Error Correction which is airframe dependant. Once upon a time I knew what exactly that meant and others more current will no doubt explain.

My understanding of the +50 ft is to allow for the fact that non precision approaches are now flown with a continual decent (cda) profile ie no level flight at mda with a dirty dive at the end. The +50 allows for a go around to be flown at the end of the cda without the mda being broken. Used to be +30 at BA connect.

It is going to be interesting when we get to November, which is traditionally misty.

Perhaps the AD will lay on a soup kitchen for all the stranded passengers

Of course, some operators appear to be flying a platform approach where they descend to minimums and fly level to either they sight the airport or reach a DME distance to go around. It's legal, still safe, providing you don't sink below the level in the charts and just a little untidier, though no problem if you land at 65kts.....

50 feet - 30 feet - all variations on a theme; my current employer uses MDA plus 10% of ROD - go figure!

So, in repsonse to what is only, after all, a recommendation our illustrious airport director (plus associates) pushes through a £40M project to 'improve' airport safety because (shock! horror!) some operators might refuse to operate into IOM.

But don't worry boys! Whilst we achieve this (unecessary) quantum leap in saftey we'll degrade safety to the point that during what is historically the crappiest period of weather the Island has, we'll let you try to scrape in with no localiser, no approach lights and a completely unworkable MDA.

If anything goes wrong there's a going to be a culpable negligence case that'll cost the Manx taxpayer a lot more than £40M.

Chin up, chaps! As you know, events such as low cloud is a rare event on the Isle of Man. Here's to an abnormally good Autumn.

Well done to the guys who have achieved a result. It seems we're back to normal with dme ranges & heights adjusted for the displaced threshold. Only begs the question - why????
