Jimwool your request as to where the photos came from reminds me of a vicious schoolteacher of mine many moons ago smiling as he asked, with a cane behind his back (crocodile smiles)........are you airport management?

No big deal really.
IIRC there's only been one incident when it might have been of use - light aircraft ran out of fuel a mile or so short of the runway - about 30 years ago!

Of course, can never happen, 2 engines being taken out by low level birds. Bet the folks in the river Hudson were very greatful to have boats nearby. How many twins operate from Ronaldsway? Oh yes, most (all) of them! I know birds do fly around the airport, I had a seagull hit the trailing edge of our ATP on approach to IOM.
Aside from their wider problems and challenges, I'd imagine that RE have their hands full establishing a reliable IOM-LCY and trying to fill the 3000+ seats a week they are offering there right now. (3000 if, and when, the big ATR arrives).
There may well be a question mark over how committed FlyBe really are to LPL, (IOM is their only LPL route) and I'd imagine they only started it originally as part of their strategy of putting the squeeze on Euromanx.
However, taking FlyBe on would be a massive risk for RE, as a large part of the combined LPL/MAN market from IOM is pretty fluid and pax will go to either, depending on the fares, so by flying to both FlyBe effectively keep control of the significant overall IOM - NW market. If anyone challenged that 'monopoly' they'd no doubt respond aggressively. There is plenty of slack in the roster for the IOM based aircraft to go to DUB and back a few times a week and p!ss in RE's backyard.
Also, RE have a pretty poor record on IOM routes down the years.......LPL, MAN, LTN and PIK have all been and gone, so it would be disappointing if anyone gave them any encouragement with this rumour.

Can't imagine RE would want to challenge BE on any routes the two have a pretty good business relationship seen as though RE have been doing a WET Lease in BHD for BE for the last year or so and some points in the year GLA.
DHSS flights
As I understand it, that departure will usually be a dead leg to get the aircraft back to IOM for the second IOM to Chester flight mid-morning, as there will not normally be any patients ready to return to IOM at such an early hour. The reverse happens at the end of the day with a dead leg into Chester.
These dead or empty flights are all factored into the overall arrangements and, presumably, the costs.

Those dead leg sectors would be perfect for using as commercial sectors for the public then... I hope it happens as it would be ideal for me! Are the check-in and security facilities required to be to commercial standards for these DHSS flights? What's stopping them from setting up commercial flights if so?
