LUTON
So everyone agrees that the existing police helicopter base is now in the wrong location and has to be moved. There doesn’t seem to be an issue with helicopters bringing in passengers for executive jet movements landing on the south stands or even landing on the Signature ramp so why can’t they land at the proposed new base? The truth would seem to be that the airport at a late stage has identified that the proposed new base, which would have contained a hangar, offices and a staff car park, would be better used for valuable long term car parking.

On the broader issue of all such police air support activities, arguably, one of the shortcomings of the entire concept is that they are in effect, a military-style OAT operation (which to an extent, is recognised by the CAA because such activities operate under a Police Air Operator's Certificate that permits certain [sensible] dispensations from the Air Navigation Order that would otherwse, apply to these flights) with in the main, ex-military pilots who are highly skilled and very experienced in flying 'close to the envelope' when required, yet at civil airfields and particularly civil airports inside controlled airspace, air traffic control (and airport authorities) have to apply civil procedures, civil criteria and civil operating/safety requirements.
Time for a strategic review, methinks...

Wizzair & Easyjet
According to OAG:
Anybody got an idea what proportion of these flights are operated by Wizzair & Easyjet out of LTN??
The world’s airlines will (in April) operate 51,556 services into and out of Eastern Europe, 13 per cent, or nearly 6,000 flights, more than in April 2005. Some 2,500 of those additional flights are to and from Poland, where the April total of nearly 13,000 services represents a 24 per cent increase on last year.

So today ends the first month of Luton’s runway resurfacing work with another 5 months of actual work left. If the work is on schedule then 360m of new tarmac should have been laid by tonight. Does anyone know how the work is progressing and which end has been started first

Quote from Cap493:
"The difficulty isn't primarily to do with landings but rather, take-offs, the current use of Delta and in any new location, vortex wake separation requirements on departure, bearing in mind that the Police - unlike other corporate helicopters - usually depart on a priority status Category 'A' or Category 'B' flight and so understandably, don't want to be delayed. A new site that is beyond the critical 760 metres so that it can effectively, operate independently of runway and taxiway movements (except obviously, when the helicopter needs to cross the runway) would be absolutely ideal from everyone's perspective."
With the above point in mind just how do other commercial operators manage at other airports? Aberdeen for example?
To add insult to injury Ive just heard from my man in the know that the chopper coppers have been given 3 months to move from their current location!!!! Homeless chopper coppers! a PR inferno is en-route for whoever is the brains(?!) behind all this. Oh well as long as those who instigated it are sitting pretty there shouldnt be anything to worry about eh?

Chiltern police helicopter
FedupBLAH, I heard today that it was nearer six months that they had to be out, and if they can't find a new place to operate from there will be no Police helicopter in Beds/Herts although this did come from a driver at the airport.I agree lets hope the decsion maker on this can live with the decsion of depriving the area of somthing as important as this.I don't think it will be long before the national press get a sniff at this never mind the protester's of the Luton airport expansion plans.

No, I think you will find its 11 months and even if it goes that way they will find a new nest even if its only temporary and it will be close by rather than a retreat to Benson or the ilk.
Even their current location started off as a portable building so it may just be back to basics for a while.

On the basis of an as yet unconfirmed information I rescind my figure of 11 months pending a 'chat' with the Luton Airport people next week.
It seems that the move downwards from 11 months to a much lesser number took place in the last few days.
The rest of my post remains valid though.

This incident seems to be desperately poor publicity for the new management.
Isn't the new MD the former Finance Director? Isn't this what always happens when the 'bottom line' experts take charge?

Alongside Spittlesea Lane before the road was put under the taxiway, but that would be more than eight years ago. There are still a few trees left opposite the hotel.

The photos were taken from the former road outside what is now the Holiday Inn Express hotel as it headed for the fire station. The original road was much lower than the present road at this point.
This photo was taken with the pegs in the ground for the new Holiday Inn Express hotel with just a few trees still intact from the former wood. At the time I could not work out how a hotel and car park could fit on to such a small piece of land.

A couple of questions.
What is project Bunny? It is something to do with building work inside the terminal and work has already started. Walking around the terminal an area from the landside bar towards the outsize luggage X-ray machine is boarded up. The left luggage room is no more as this area has been opened up to provide access passed the closed off section.
It has been mentioned here that outsize luggage was to become extra check-in desks but although the actual X-ray machine area is behind the closed off section the back of the area where the actual check-in desks would go is unaffected and still open as a staff entrance to the undercroft.
Also why is Halcyon House gradually getting its windows boarded up on the ground floor? I did hear a few years ago that the former Court Line building was suffering from subsidence. Has this got something to do with it?

Halcyon House, well rumour has it that Air Foyle a while back, removed some internal walls on the ground floor causing a few overall structural problems?
