Czech Airlines pilot furlough imminent?

Czecho Airlines went too big,now they have to get rid of four 737s and have to furlough a number of pilots. The company is struggling and cutting back on some routes-particularly the UK(GLA,LGW),more to follow.Huge loss this year(1BN czech crowns).
Watch this space for more to come.

Fly OK regularly in Central/Eastern Europe and have noticed a distinct slip in standards overall, with the interior of some 737s looking decidedly tired these days. Those in charter config seem to mix in with those in scheduled layout which makes seat pitch and comfort a bit of a lottery at times (even in J-class) on scheduled routes. Fussy sods us SLF types.

Delayed two hours today due to u/s weather radar. Fact it needed repair obviously not a problem, especially with weather pattern over much of central Europe, but ground staff simply returned to the 'good old days' of lying to pax.

It was the old 'more information in 20 minutes' every 20 minutes sketch and a failure to admit any real problem at all......until just after BA pushed back from stand. Passengers kept at gate with no refreshment vouchers etc throughout.

It did surprise me when the former Minister of Defence was appointed to run Czech, bringing with him a number of his MoD colleagues but little knowledge or experience of running an airline. Thought this approach to airline management had long since gone. A stream of reported technical problems in Czech newspapers followed, rumoured locally to be nothing more than part of a lobby to ensure planned fleet upgrade progressed.

Airline just been cleared to takeover Travel Servis which has a low cost carrier under its management and it will be interesting to see the way things move forward. Maybe this could explain why some of the 737s will be surplus to requirements. New Airbus 320 and 321's already on their way for mainline operation.

Is LOT's 'Poland Wings' approach likely to be repeated? That really does seem to be a carrier with problems.

When Czech gets it right, for my money the airline is among Europe's better short-medium haul carriers - probably the best in 'New Europe'. Maybe I am biassed, but as a part time resident of Prague as well as the UK, I hope that any talk of financial problems is premature and that problems which do exist are not beyond fixing.
