Malaysian Airlines Foresees Huge Investment in Airbus A380s

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Malaysian Airlines will spend more than 257 million ringgit (US$67.6 million; euro 55.8 million) to prepare for the delivery of the first of its six giant Airbus A380 planes, a senior executive said Monday.
The airline will get its first A380 in the first quarter of 2007, Chief Financial Officer Low Chee Teng told Dow Jones Newswires after the company's annual shareholder meeting. The others will be delivered later that year or in 2008.

Government-run holding company Penerbangan Malaysia Bhd., which has a 69 percent stake in Malaysian Air, is paying about US$1.5 billion for the planes and will lease them to the carrier.

Before taking delivery, the airline must build a hangar costing about 200 million ringgit (US$52.6 million; euro 43.4 million) to accommodate the aircraft's 80-meter (264-foot) wingspan, Low said.

Simulators will cost another 57 million ringgit (US$15 million; euro 12.3 million), Low said, and servicing equipment and other fittings must be purchased.

When the first A380 rolls off the Airbus assembly line in 2006, it will be the biggest passenger plane ever, accommodating 555 passengers with a typical three-class seat layout. In comparison, Boeing Co. 747-400 planes can carry 420 passengers.
