Thumbs down Advanced passenger information

First was the US and now the UK and Spain are also trying to legislate to have pax data transmitted after check in closes and before the plane departs!

40 min window max to fax out around 300 photocopied passports if you're a UK carrier with 757/767s heading out to spain after mid December. Huge cost, delays and frustrations for both checkin staff and pax!

The Spanish government have passed their legislation and it will come into force in mid dec or early jan. Only the Uk appears to have been caught by this one as it was aimed at non-schengen countries in order to catch the 10 states that will become EU members as of may04, but are not currently signed up to schengen.

Uk immigration also on the case trying to implement legislation that would give them the power to request all inbound UK carriers provide them with a photocopy of the pax passport, taken at the overseas airport, to prevent against destroying of docs on route.

On top of the UK and spain, there is also a EU proposal which would require all non EEA data to be transmitted to the relevant state before departure.

As usual, whole cost likely to hit industry with no government help.
