The airport is AFB Hoedspruit……they landed and missed the correct turnoff/taxiway then continued down the wrong taxi way. The taxiway is a “dead end” for aircraft. The pilot elected to do a 3 point turn using thrust reverse and the rest is history………….the a/c is apparently a “write off” because of all the damage incurred………

As always there's a lesson in this for all of us. There will come a time in all our careers where a situation will arise that will exceed either our or our aircrafts ability. The trick is to call it quits before the situation turns into an incident/accident. The go-around is the most obvious example I can think of. It's only by the good grace of God that I've managed to drag my backside out if some situations that I should never have been in in the first place. I was lucky. This chap wasn't.

A retired SAA captain was at the helm. Is this the reason SAA retires their pilots when they reach a certain age? Makes one wander how such an experienced captain could make such a blunder. Condolences to the F/O who was probably trying his utmost to prevent the whole thing from unfolding.

Pfft, the F/O got an exciting ride, and learned a lot at somebody else's expense - he doesn't have a tiller, and he couldn't exactly stand on the brakes while they're backing up - all he needed to do to cover his butt beforehand was say, 'Hey Captain, that's a really dumb idea and I recommend you have a rethink!' then sit back and watch the show - awesome! Being an F/O has it's perks you know, you should milk them for all they're worth ![Smilie](https://www.pprune.org/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Here's my rule of thumb though for reversing the -200: NEVER DO IT. I know the manual says you can.....but just don't.
