Accidents and Close CallsDiscussion on accidents, close calls, and other unplanned aviation events, so we can learn from them, and be better pilots ourselves.
Surely an aircraft should be flyable even with full flaps extended. Consider the case of a go-around after approaching with gear down and full flap. During the GA the gear will be retracted immediately but the flaps will take time to retract. Or in the case of the Lockheed 12 are you committed to landing once the flaps are fully extended?
Many older aircraft would not climb away with drag dangling and some older aircraft required the live throttle to be retarded in the case of an engine failure to maintain control and some required the attitude to be lowered to maintain speed and control authority, some required you to leave the gear down because when it rotated on retraction the drag increased. The Miles Magister would not climb away with full flap. Technology has improved dramatically but the old universal set of immediate actions taught was very very good Power Drag Trim fly the aeroplane then later on think about what has happened.
